Over the past decade, young women have veered sharply to the Left, embracing feminist positions on abortion, the gender “wage gap,” and more. In contrast, young men have moved modestly to the Right. This trend has been observed in numerous countries: Australia, Canada, South Korea, United Kingdom, and the United States.
Liberal commentators invariably attributed this gender gap to men being “disaffected” and “disgruntled,” conveniently ignoring the fact that women, not men, have been the biggest contributors to the gender divide. Writers turned a blind eye to the fact that men have become wary of feminist ideology that ignores female-perpetrated domestic violence and blames differences between women and men on “misogyny” and “patriarchal oppression.”
The gender chasm exploded into public consciousness during the recent US presidential election, when men cast their votes in droves to propel Donald Trump to victory. Exit polls revealed that strong majorities of married men, men with children, White men, and Latino men all pulled the lever in favor of Trump. Indeed, men had become the new “power demographic”.
Before long, thoughtful liberals began to challenge the stereotype of the knuckle-dragging male. Dubbing November 5 as the “testosterone podcast election,” liberal professor Scott Galloway revealed the disconnect between the Democratic messaging and the concerns of working class voters: “Are you focused on international affairs or the rights of a special interest group when my daughter is in Pennsylvania, at Penn, my other daughter in PR in Chicago, and my son is in the basement vaping and playing video games. And you want me to worry about Ukraine?”
At CNN, commentator Scott Jennings opined, “I think the Democrats in this election made men feel like that the patriarchy is over, boys, and we're going to put you in the back seat for a while and you're just going to have to accept it without any thought to the ramifications of telling people who are out honestly trying to make a living, provide for their families, be good husbands, be good fathers.”
Writing in the Boston Globe, Richard Reeves warned, “If the Democrats conclude that sexism propelled Donald Trump to victory, their spell in the political wilderness will last a lot longer than four years…..if progressives dismiss whole swaths of the electorate as misogynists, they will send even more men running toward the political right.”
Time will tell whether liberals decide to maintain their ideological purity and become increasingly disconnected from the concerns of most voters. Or will liberals be willing to stand up to challenge the feminist shibboleths that have long held sway over the progressive worldview.
