On April 26, 2023, a day after Biden announced his reelection bid, NEA leadership announced that the union would recommend Biden and Harris in the Democratic primary.
Then during the National Education Association’s annual four-day representative assembly in Florida, the 5,455 members present were asked to vote in a secret ballot on whether the union should officially endorse Biden and Harris. Nearly 84% of members voted YES.
Apparently, Jill Biden is an NEA member and spoke to union delegates virtually during the meeting. She told union members that “educators have champions in the White House.”
According to Influence Watch, the NEA donated more than $6 million during the 2020 presidential election cycle, with $873,849 going to Democrat candidates, and over $5.1 million donated to campaigns against Republicans.
During the 2016 election cycle, the NEA donated more than $2.6 million to candidates running for office, with over 86% going to Democrats. NEA gave $2.2 million to PACs. The top recipients in 2016 included Hillary Clinton ($107,561), Bernie Sanders ($20,085) and a number of democrat senate and house candidates.
For the 16% of union members who do not back Biden, it's time to consider whether you want to continue paying dues to a union that doesn't represent your political interests. Leaving could have a significant negative financial impact for the union, too.
For example, the NEA says it will have about 2.3 million full-time equivalent members in the 2023-24 fiscal year. If 16% of members (368,000) leave the union and stop paying the $204 national dues fee, it could cut as much as $75 million from the NEA's revenue.
Furthermore, members can leave the union and still retain their pay and benefits.

Of course, it should be indicated that union activists attend these conventions, so the support for Biden would be higher than for the membership generally. I think it's fair to say that far more than 16% would not support Biden. They're just along for the ride as union members, and allow their voices to be downed out by the activists. It is also revealing that teachers' union activists have no problem supporting a president who is clearly mentally unfit for the job. Time to quit your union.
