In Connecticut, for many years the Republican official position has been to remain “Neutral and Silent” and follow the Democrat lead on issues despite the Democrat onslaught on conservative voters and values. To paraphrase Hamilton, those who stand for nothing fall for everything, and Connecticut’s march leftward has been quite stark since 1992 when Ross Perot split the Republican vote and local hero George Bush lost.
Worse, many such Neutral and Silent Republicans have actively enabled Democrat agendas. Lowell Weicker enacted the income tax and John Rowland, also a Republican, made it progressive. Connecticut budgets have grown faster than the economy, Connecticut has ceased being a magnet for wealthy New Yorkers, and Connecticut has become a cautionary tale of bad economic policy. Greenwich is famous for its Neutral and Silent Republicans like Livvy Floren, who, in her last term in office, was the only Republican to vote with Democrats in favor of joining the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
The Neutral and Silent actively enable the vast array of Democrat grievance tactics which are tearing at the fabric of our society disguised as fake kindness. Here’s a short list of Democrat studies in grievance: Critical Race Theory, Critical Gender Theory, Queer Theory, Post Colonial Theory, Critical Pedagogy, Cultural Studies, Critical Legal Studies, Ecocritical Theory, Critical Disabilities Studies, Critical Management Studies, Critical Whiteness Studies.
These theories aim to dismantle US laws and society because, they claim, our laws are designed, not for equality under the law, but rather they allow oppressors to take advantage of the oppressed and that anyone who resists change are simply denying oppression.
DEI is the implementation of several critical theory derived grievances, including Critical Race Theory (CRT), Gender Theory, Queer Theory and Post Colonial Theory. DEI translates these ideas into practice with “anti-racist” racial discrimination policies, “equity” re-education programs, race focused hiring practices, gender indoctrination in schools, and attacks on any push-back as denial.
Greenwich’s Neutral and Silent Republicans deny CRT/DEI and Gender indoctrination in schools with help from their Democrat sidekicks who claim they don’t teach the academic theory on which their DEI initiatives are based, as they encourage teachers to read CRT literature. More broadly in Connecticut, the state has resisted eliminating DEI and the Neutral and Silent echo the Democrats maintaining that reduced funding will impact low income families.
The reason the Neutral and Silent maintain Democrat positions is simple: They are Democrats at heart and this allows them to support Democrat positions on DEI, safetyism and education, while posing as Republicans. This is how Democrats win even in Republican towns: The Neutral and Silent claim that Republican policy won’t win in Connecticut and that Democrats own Connecticut and that voting for their Democrat-lite position is better than voting for the Democrats even if the results are the same. At the same time they support Democrat positions and join Democrats in calling Republicans extremist.
The fact is that Democrats have not gained ground in Connecticut. It is Republicans who have lost ground (see chart). By remaining Neutral and Silent, these “Republicans” fail to push back and fail to lead on any issues. They claim they are better than Democrats, but the results speak for themselves as evidenced in the general decline of Republican registrations statewide and the ever ballooning budgets of towns like Greenwich, where the Neutral and Silent rule.
After all, who would join a party whose members are attacked by their own party?
Ironically, the Neutral and Silent will happily tell you their silence has always been attacked, so perhaps this isn’t a winning strategy and it’s time for Republicans to get rid of the Neutral and Silent and speak up. The status quo is clearly not working for Republicans.
