The Fairfield Republican Town Committee held a press conference earlier today and issued a statement regarding troubling new complaints filed against the Fairfield Democrat Registrar of Voters.

Recent filings with the State Elections Enforcement Commission (SEEC) and the Secretary of State’s office (SOTS) have brought forward significant concerns regarding the conduct of Fairfield Democrat Registrar of Voters, Matt Waggner. Two new complaints, submitted by Republican Registrar of Voters Cathy Politi, state that Waggner has again been deleting voter registrations from the Connecticut Voter Registration System, raising serious questions about the integrity of voter registration processes in Fairfield.

“These complaints are deeply troubling and cast serious doubt on the integrity of our voter registration system,” said Laura Devlin, former legislator and ranking member of the Government Administration and Elections Committee and current Chairwoman of the Fairfield Republican Town Committee. “The fact that Mr. Waggner is deleting online voter registrations and re-entering them manually is not only unacceptable, it begs the question of WHY? We need answers,” she added.

Clear evidence supports the claim that Waggner has been deleting online voter registrations and then re-entering them in the system. “The process Waggner is using—printing electronic registrations, deleting online records - including the voter's signature submitted with that registration - and then manually re-entering information—is not only inefficient but also raises serious concerns about the accuracy and security of our voter data,” said Cathy Politi.

This latest development adds to a series of complaints and investigations involving Waggner’s conduct. Previously, in 2023, the Secretary of State’s office referred an investigation to the SEEC concerning Waggner’s alleged neglect of duties and violations of election laws surrounding the November 2022 election. Additionally, a complaint regarding unauthorized destruction, damage, and removal of public records from October 2022 to April 2023, including voter registration records, remains under review between SEEC and the State Library. During this period, Waggner also imposed FOI fees on the Republican Registrar of Voters, obstructing access to critical voter records.

“We have been very vocal about the need to ensure election integrity and building confidence among voters that our systems are trustworthy. That’s why we called for a bipartisan commission to review and make recommendations to improve the security of Connecticut’s electoral process,” said House and Senate Republican Leaders Vincent Candelora and Stephen Harding. “Whether it’s absentee ballot fraud in Bridgeport or mishandling of voter registrations in Fairfield, action is needed now to demonstrate to Connecticut residents that they can trust and have confidence in the security of elections in Connecticut,” they added.

CT Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas has previously emphasized her commitment to ensuring public trust in the election process. Yet, despite multiple complaints and ongoing investigations at the state level, there has been no effective action taken to address these issues.

Given the gravity of these allegations and the mounting evidence against Waggner, it is past time for her, along with other state and local officials to answer the question “Do they think it’s appropriate for a registrar of voters to delete voter registration records?” If yes, why? If not, then take action to make him stop.
