New Haven Major Justin Elicker told a journalist yesterday that he's "not worried" about Trump's Department of Justice investigating and potentially prosecuting state and local officials who do not cooperate with mass deportation efforts.
"So I'm not worried because we are following the law," Elicker said smugly. "And it's very clear with our Welcoming Cities Order that all employees need to follow the federal law and there's a very different scenario when employees don't participate and the city doesn't participate in, say, ICE raids or the work that the Trump administration is trying to do to persecute people in our community that aren't a threat to our community."
The full Welcoming City Order promises New Haven will become a sanctuary for illegals by giving illegals a government ID, preventing police from ascertaining immigration status, restricting officials from cooperating with ICE, and more.
Elicker tried to carefully draw a distinction between "participating" in ICE raids and "actively preventing" them.
“We are not preventing the federal government from doing their work in our community. But we’re not going to participate in it because we have a lot of things to focus on, in particular with the police department on violence in our community,” Elicker said. “We have very limited resources and we need to work on keeping our community safe, not going along with the Trump administration’s, in my view, wrong-headed effort to persecute people that aren’t a threat to our community.”
Elicker said Trump's mass deportation efforts amounted to a "waste of resources and it doesn't reflect the values of our community."
"We are not worried because we are doing what is our attorneys have reviewed as abiding by the law, and we think it's the right thing to do," said Elicker. "And I'd add that it's important for the immigrant community to feel comfortable contacting the police department to share information."
"With a federal government that now is threatening local government and trying to compel police departments to do the work of the federal government, that not only diverts our resources but also creates an environment where people are afraid of government officials," claimed Elicker.
"What world are in right now where, because of a disagreement on policy, the Trump Administration is threatening arresting local officials," wondered Elicker who claimed this is the kind of thing you only see in "Iran or Russia".
Elicker said it's "shocking" to him that the Trump Admin would want to target illegal aliens in places like schools and churches, and then painted a picture of a child being left behind after the parents get deported.
He shouldn't worry about that because Tom Homan promised to deport whole families.
"I think that people have to find that compassion inside of them and think about the practical consequences of what the federal government is talking about right now and push back on something that is unethical and not reflective of the values of our community," said Elicker.
One of the practical consequences being that legal citizens of the state of Connecticut would no longer have to foot the estimated $1.28 billion dollar bill to pay for illegal aliens.
Elicker also whipped up some fear about the LGBTQ+ community.
"There's a lot of concerns about the federal government threatening to cut funding to very important programs that cities like us rely on," lamented Elicker.
As a reminder, Elicker previously appeared with CT AG Tong, New Haven Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Madeline Negrón, New Haven Chief of Police Karl Jacobson, and immigration attorneys from Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services ("IRIS") on December 5th to address the city's plans for protecting all immigrants, including illegal aliens, from the Trump Administration.
Then on January 16, 2025, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, who represents New Haven, voted AGAINST the "Preventing Violence Against Women By Illegal Aliens Act."
And on January 18, 2025, Elicker launched a new guide to highlight resources available to illegal aliens, including benefits like HUSKY insurance for "undocumented children 15 and under", driver's licenses for illegal aliens, financial aid for college, and the assurance that public schools and the Connecticut Department of Children and Families will not report illegal aliens to the Department of Homeland Security or ICE.
Those are apparently the New Haven values that Elicker keeps talking about.

In both cases, either are dis-qualifiers.
