Beyond the financial and systemic issues, the future of our U.S. healthcare system is facing a systemic crisis of a shortage of supply of qualified physicians.

Burnout and employee dissatisfaction are at an all time low for physicians and other healthcare professionals, which will poses a significant threat to the future supply and accessibility to quality medical care.

Alarming Rates of Dissatisfaction: A recent survey conducted by the Doctors Company a nationwide Physician Owned Malpractice Insurance Company revealed an alarming Net Promoter Score (NPS) of -52 for the medical profession, with only 12% of respondents recommending a medical career to others. This is even worse for younger physicians (8% of millennials), indicating an existential crisis in the pipeline of future healthcare providers coupled with an increasing demand for medical services as the Baby Boomers hit the Medicare system. Moreover, many doctors that normally serve as mentors are actively discouraging someone from pursuing a career in medicine.

The alarm has been sounded - our health providers are in distress.

What are the Key Drivers of Physician Dissatisfaction and Burnout?

Survey comments include: “Patients are openly distrustful, aggressive, and disrespectful”, “Trust is low, people believe kids on TikTok and Facebook over physicians, people believe crazy conspiracy theories with no backing. It’s actually depressing”, “ The system is discriminating and pays different fee for same service”, “we are close to major catastrophic nationwide healthcare crisis” and “Healthcare has become a for-profit business now run by business people that have profit as their main goal not patient care”.

    • Misinformation on Social Media and Patient Distrust: Internet and Social Media Misinformation. Now patients trust online sources over medical professionals - the physician-patient relationship is being rapidly eroded.
    • High Costs and Lack of Trust: Physicians are frustrated by the high cost of medical care and drugs and general distrust in the modern healthcare system.
    • Bureaucracy and Administrative Burden: Healthcare bureaucracy from excessive regulations, health insurance company hurdles (and denials), and the demands for instant access through digital portals divert physicians' time and energy away from direct patient care.
    • For-Profit Mentality: Many physicians are frustrated in the shift of the for-profit focus and financial hurdles to meet over a patient’s well-being - Physicians are starting to feel like "assembly line workers."
    • Malpractice Concerns: The constant threat of malpractice lawsuits adds another layer of stress and defensiveness to the practice of medicine.

The Impact of Physician Dissatisfaction and the Future of Medicine: Physician dissatisfaction and Patient distrust have tangible consequences. This burnout can result in reduced empathy, increased errors, and ultimately, a general decline in the quality of patient care.

Since there is less enthusiasm, the reluctance of current physicians to recommend their profession to others foreshadows a severe shortage of healthcare professionals in the coming years, exacerbating existing access issues and potentially leading to a "major catastrophic nationwide healthcare crisis." This will be a baby boom crisis of epic proportion if this health care ship is not righted soon.

If doctors could choose how they practiced, were fairly compensated and the bureaucratic noose around the medical profession were lifted, we would have a better healthcare system.
