Thank God, Republican Jonathan Trotta is running against Democrat Matt Hoey for First Selectman this November 4th. Four years ago, no one stepped up to run against First Selectman Hoey, and it is my opinion that our town has suffered as a result.
Specifically, property taxes have risen significantly every year with zero discussion about reducing taxes.
Properties were bought using precious tax resources which have turned out to be boondoggles. These include the property on the right of the Community Center, and the property just before Lake Quonnipaug on the right going north on Route 77, both of which were purchased with the intent of knocking down the existing structures, but which the town has been prevented from doing so because the homes are historical buildings. Another example is the purchase of the Guilford Mooring property for $3 million with the intent of knocking down the restaurant for the purpose of creating a park, only to find out that the owner of the restaurant business has a valid lease which trumps the owner of the property’s willingness to sell the property to the Town. Guilford is now being sued by the owner of the business. Such incompetence is inexcusable and should not be rewarded with another four years.
Finally, Guilford now has a methadone clinic which is 250 feet away from the closest house, 200 feet away from a Dairy Queen frequented by children, and 470 feet away from a large daycare facility. First Selectman Hoey’s singular role in bringing this methadone clinic to Guilford is documented in the below video “Ignored and Disrespected”. I strongly encourage all Guilford citizens to watch this video before casting your vote on November 4th.
Guilford can do better. Please vote for Jonathan Trotta for First Selectman.
