Imagine fleeing the relentless terror of war torn Ukraine, only to be viciously murdered in the United States of America. Iryna Zarutska had her throat slashed in a horrifying, unprovoked attack that was entirely captured by surveillance footage. It happened on August 22, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The United States failed her by elevating "equity" above public safety. American judges allowed a dangerous repeat offender to prowl the streets like a predator in waiting. The very system sworn to protect Iryna abandoned it’s duty, leaving us all to question our safety as American citizens.
The assailant, 34 year old Decarlos Brown Jr. was a walking red flag with 14 arrests since 2009. These arrests include armed robbery, assaults on women, and resisting officers. Diagnosed with schizophrenia, he walked out of prison in 2023, only to be arrested again in January 2025 for misusing 911. He was then released on a flimsy written promise to appear. In July, a mental health competency evaluation was ordered but never completed, leaving Brown untreated and able to commit his rampage. Catch and release, which is fueled by woke judges who overlook violent histories for “feel good” reforms, is systemic suicide. The faces and names of the judges that let this man go should be on the front cover of every newspaper and magazine in the country. This would serve as a much needed wake up call for judges nationwide.
Connecticut stares into the same abyss. Our 2017 Public Act 17-145 gutted cash bail for misdemeanors, all while our judges face thousands of complaints for lenient rulings. Decisions and policies like these will turn our streets into killing grounds. Ask yourself, is the virtue signaling really worth innocent people being slaughtered in public?
As a Republican candidate for West Hartford Town Council, I'm demanding we dismantle these deadly roots before more blood spills. We need competency in our judicial system, not emotion. Common sense tells us that a mentally deranged man with 14 prior arrests and violent tendencies should not be free to walk the streets, so why was he?
Rest in peace Iryna, I am so sorry our country failed you.
