On September 17th, the Guilford Courier published a letter written by Kenneth Wilson Jr. entitled “Leadership That Rises above Politics,” in which Mr. Wilson extols the virtues of the Independent Party in Guilford. The problem with his holier than thou self-righteous letter is that it is intentionally misleading.

For example, he says, “When I last checked, the majority of Guilford voters were registered as Independents or Unaffiliated (7,493) vs. Republican (3,720) or Democrat (6,793)."

He cleverly lumps registered Independent and registered Unaffiliated voters together to deceive the reader, knowing that they are not one and the same.

Registered Unaffiliated voters intentionally do not want to be identified as belonging to any political party recognized by the State of Connecticut including the Republican, Democrat, Green, Working Family, Communist, and yes, the Independent Party.

Currently in Guilford, there are only 388 people registered as Independent Party voters, so you see how lumping them in with the registered Unaffiliated voters to infer that they represent “the majority of Guilford voters” is intentionally misleading.

Mr. Wilson doubles down on this misinformation when he states “Alas, there was the birth of a new local group, the Guilford Independent Party, aiming to represent the majority of unaffiliated voters disenchanted with the major parties.”

Mr. Wilson continues his deception when he says the “new slate of Independents seeking office this year, again on Row C, aren’t tied to either major party.”

An incredible statement when he knows that in 2021, the Guilford Independent Party (which no one had ever heard of) conspired with the Guilford Democrat party to endorse three unaffiliated candidates, and two Democrat incumbents for the Guilford Board of Education ran a joint campaign (Row A+C) with the Guilford Democrat Party, and succeeded in excluding the Republican Party from being represented on the Guilford Board of Education.

This close cooperation with the Guilford Democratic Leadership has continued.

Since the 2021 Board of Education election, Independent Party representation on Guilford Boards and Commissions has grown to over 40 members. An incredible number considering there are only 388 registered Independent party members in Guilford.

The reality is, there is little to no difference between the Independent party and the Democrat party in Guilford, and they have successfully made a mockery of the minority rule which says that the party of the First Selectman should never have more than a simple majority on any elected or appointed board or commission.

One party Democrat/Independent rule has successfully excluded diversity of thought from Guilford Boards and Commissions, but has not made our community better.

Please do not be duped by Mr. Wilson’s letter to the editor.

A vote for Independent candidates in this year’s election is a vote for continued Democrat leadership which we can no longer afford.
