Remember the “No Kings” rally? The one where local Democrats puffed up about democracy, fairness, and stopping authoritarianism?

Yeah — turns out someone forgot to forward the memo to Middletown City Hall.

Among the speakers that day was Gene Nocera, Middletown’s acting mayor — emphasis on acting. “My point today is to be here in support,” he told the crowd. “It is beyond a crisis in our country, and we’re faced with some dreadful, dreadful decisions that are being made every day that are trickling down to our local government.”

Uh-huh. Dreadful decisions “trickling down” — like pretending you were elected?

Because while Nocera was solemnly warning about abuses of power onstage, offstage he was… abusing power. Middletown’s charter could not be clearer: when the mayor leaves, the council president acts as mayor temporarily — like babysitting the houseplants, not moving in and changing the locks.

Yet on the campaign trail, Nocera’s literature refers to him as “Mayor Nocera,” dropping the word “acting” entirely — because why wait for voters when you can just print the title yourself?

Acting mayor means you keep the lights on. It does not mean you declare yourself mayor and roll out campaign materials calling yourself “Mayor Nocera.” The charter says he’s there to maintain operations — not to pretend the voters already handed him the job. But Gene apparently heard “acting mayor” and thought it meant try on the crown and see how it feels.

The same guy who showed up to shout “No Kings!” is now behaving like the Duke of Main Street. Apparently the slogan was really No Kings — Unless It’s Me.

Former Mayor Seb Giuliano, a person who actually earned the job through votes instead of vibes, didn’t hold back. He pointed to the charter, the history, the precedent — and reality: acting means acting. You’re a temp. You’re the substitute teacher. You’re not installing a throne in the office and picking out royal drapes.

Giuliano spelled it out: Nocera has “usurped all the powers, prerogatives, perquisites, benefits – including the mayoral salary – and trappings of the office,” without authority or a mandate. Essentially, Gene’s been cosplaying as mayor with taxpayer money.

Then Giuliano delivered the kind of line that probably made Nocera choke on his campaign coffee.

In an Oct. 31 Facebook post, Giuliano wrote:

“You recently participated in a ‘No Kings’ rally. That is ironic, because you are acting precisely like a monarch… If this is how you act now, what would you do if you were actually the Mayor? Would you recognize any limits?”

If Gene’s this drunk on authority when he’s pretending, imagine the coronation ceremony if he ever actually won.

Instead, Nocera’s behaving like Middletown is his own little Westeros — as if the mayor’s chair were the Iron Throne and he’s simply exercising his “birthright” to rule.

Middletown didn’t elect a king. It didn’t even elect a mayor. It got a guy who seems to think “acting mayor” means “I call dibs.”

If this is how Nocera behaves when he’s just supposed to keep the city running until voters speak, imagine the fireworks if he actually got the job. At this pace, the first order of business would be commissioning a portrait and demanding the town crier salute him.

At this rate, Middletown might as well skip the election and just order a throne — though based on the ego involved, Nocera’s probably already measured the doorway for one.
