For a part-time lawmaker, House Majority Leader Rep. Jason Rojas (D-East Hartford) sure spends a full-time amount of energy attacking suburban residents on Facebook.
After Democrats shoved through their 100-page housing behemoth during last week’s special session, the CTGOP posted a fairly tame warning about the Democrats’ war on the suburbs.
Instead of explaining the bill or defending a single provision, Rojas sprinted to Facebook to unleash a teenage-level insult, sneering, “As the kids say, they’re crashing out,” before mocking a CT169 Strong activist for losing her local Fairfield P&Z seat — an odd flex for the man who controls the Connecticut House calendar.
This would be weird if it were a one-time outburst. But it isn’t. It’s a pattern. On June 7, Rojas went full meltdown mode, declaring that CT169 Strong — a grassroots group made up of parents, homeowners, and volunteers — was “anti-progress, anti-children, anti-family,” accusing them of lying, confusing people, and using fear as a political tactic.
Yes, you read that right: a group of actual parents is “anti-children” because they don’t want Hartford micromanaging their neighborhoods like a college planning exercise. And it goes back even further. On April 29, he issued an “alert” that CT169 Strong was spreading “misinformation,” claiming they want “people to overspend on housing.”
This is the kind of hysterical nonsense you get when a politician runs out of arguments but still needs to convince himself he’s the smartest guy in the room. Rojas talks about suburban residents as if they’re orchestrating some secret plot to bankrupt themselves, when in reality they just want basic infrastructure, transparency, and a say in their own communities. But that’s exactly what bothers him: they’re effective, organized, and capable of ruining Hartford’s long-running plan to bulldoze local control. CT169 Strong has become the one group Democratic leadership can’t intimidate — and that terrifies him.
The saddest part is that Jason Rojas isn’t some random guy ranting on Facebook. He’s the Majority Leader. He decides what bills get votes, what amendments get buried, which committees move, and which issues die quietly behind closed doors. Yet he’s online mocking suburban moms for losing local races and calling parents “anti-family” for asking questions.
This isn’t leadership. It’s what fragile politicians do when they run out of arguments.
When lawmakers are confident in their ideas, they debate. When they’re not, they smear, deflect, and lash out at private citizens. That’s all Rojas has left. He wants compliance, not conversation. And every time he melts down online, he confirms exactly what CT169 Strong has been saying: Hartford isn’t interested in partnering with towns — it’s interested in ruling them. The more he posts, the more obvious it becomes that CT169 Strong is winning the argument, and he knows it. So yes, by all means, Jason — keep typing. Keep calling your constituents liars, misinformation spreaders, and “anti-children.” Keep mocking women who serve on local boards. Keep behaving like Connecticut’s most overpaid internet troll. Because every tantrum you throw doesn’t hurt them — it exposes you. And the only thing “crashing out” in Connecticut is your composure.
