It’s a lie.

Most gun deaths occur in 2% of US counties, and all but two (97%) of those sixty counties voted for Harris in 2024. 

Anti-gun activists want to hide these facts and try and shift the focus to gun death rates, which they present in a misleading way as rates by state above.  Focusing on broad area death rates hides the concentrated nature of gun violence, which occurs mostly in some very concentrated areas, mostly in urban centers.

For example, in Chicago’s Cook County, which encompasses all of Chicago and voted 72% for Harris, the gun violence death rate is 14 per 100,000 residents.  By comparison, the highest gun violence rate by county is in Leflore County, Mississippi.  Leflore County has a gun violence death rate of 76 per 100,000.  But Leflore County had 125 gun-violence deaths in the period 2018 - 2023, whereas Cook County had 5,584, forty-four TIMES more. 

What’s more, even within Cook County those 5,600 deaths are highly concentrated in a few neighborhoods as seen in the map nearby.  Within those neighborhoods, the gun death rate is as high as 334 per 100,000, or more than four times higher than the rate in Leflore County.  But if you spread those deaths out over Chicago’s 3 million residents, or Illinois’ 13 million, you get a lower rate.  Outside of Chicago, Illinois gun violence deaths are low, and this is true also of California outside of Los Angeles and San Francisco, but this is also true of Missouri outside of St. Louis and Louisiana outside of New Orleans.

In fact, the more closely you look, the more correlated gun violence is to Democrat controlled regions, and this can be seen in a national heat map of gun violence deaths below:

Shockingly, looking at the data, one could plausibly argue that Democrats who control those highly violent hot spots are purposely avoiding fixing the problem so that they can have an excuse to disarm the population at large.

So if you’re looking for a way to save the most lives, don’t get rid of guns, get rid of Democrat control.
