William Tong finally wants to protect children. And on January 20, he made sure everyone knew it.

At a legislative forum on youth tobacco use, Connecticut’s attorney general suddenly transformed into the state’s chief guardian of childhood innocence. The message of the event was unmistakable: children are vulnerable, their judgment is still forming, and powerful industries exploit that immaturity for profit.

The entire discussion rested on the idea that young people are uniquely susceptible to manipulation and that adults have a responsibility to intervene before irreversible harm is done. Tong aligned himself squarely with that premise.

    Stirring stuff. Truly.

It was also the most honest argument Tong has made in years (if not ever) — just not in the way he intended.

Because when the topic is nicotine pouches and vape pens, children are fragile, impressionable, and in desperate need of protection. But when the topic is puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and irreversible medical interventions, Tong suddenly decides children are enlightened decision-makers whose feelings must override biology, caution, and common sense.

At the tobacco forum, Tong framed addiction as “the biggest business,” warning that corporations thrive by hooking kids before they understand the consequences. He described a system designed to exploit immaturity and lock young people into lifelong dependency. He spoke like a man who understands exactly how manipulation works.

Then he turns around and sues the federal government to protect “gender-affirming care” for minors.

So when Big Tobacco profits off addiction, it’s predatory. When gender clinics profit off transitioning children, it’s “healthcare.”

When nicotine companies target developing brains, Tong demands enforcement and shutdowns. When gender ideology targets developing brains, Tong demands lawsuits to keep it going.

When kids are too young to consent to a vape pen, they’re somehow old enough to consent to permanent medical transformation.

That’s not child protection. That’s selective outrage.

Tong wants the moral authority of “think of the children” without applying it universally. His concern isn’t about vulnerability. It’s about which industries and ideologies get immunity. Smoke shops must be policed. Gender clinics must be protected. One is exploitation. The other is politically untouchable.

Questions the press should have asked, but didn’t:

    • If children can’t understand the long-term consequences of nicotine, how can they possibly understand the consequences of sterilization?
    • If kids are too easily influenced by colorful packaging, how are they immune to social media activism and school-driven ideology?
    • If addiction is exploitation, what do you call a medical pathway that locks minors into lifelong pharmaceutical dependence?

Tong doesn’t actually believe children are capable of informed consent. He proved that on January 20. He just believes consent should be suspended when it interferes with woke progressive politics.

So now we have an attorney general who will chain the doors of smoke shops to protect kids, but chain taxpayers to courtrooms to protect gender ideology. He’ll lecture retailers about responsibility while suing anyone who asks whether medical experimentation on minors should have limits.

William Tong didn’t discover concern for children. He discovered a safer audience for it.

Protecting kids from tobacco costs him nothing politically.

Protecting kids from medical ideology would cost him everything.

And that tells you exactly what kind of “child advocate” he really is.
