For weeks, Connecticut farmers were staring at tax assessments that looked more like extortion demands than a tax bill. Their bills didn’t go up because they built anything, improved anything, or suddenly got richer. They went up because the state released new land-use values that dramatically raised the per-acre valuation of farmland, forest land, and open space.

Land meant to be protected from development pressure was suddenly being priced like waterfront condos. Towns panicked. Assessors panicked. Farmers panicked. That wasn’t “misunderstanding.” That was a policy fail.

And now all of this is being re-explained to voters through a carefully worded email from Rep. Jamie Foster (D-Ellington), sent not to apologize, not to take responsibility, but to reframe the entire disaster as proof of government competence. According to Foster, none of the panic mattered, because the real action was happening in the shadows.

“Behind the scenes, people have been working quietly…”

Oh good. The shadows. That famously comforting place where government competence thrives. When politicians start bragging about secrecy, you’re not supposed to feel reassured. You’re supposed to check your wallet and count your fingers.

This wasn’t a press release. This was a scolding email to constituents for paying attention. It was a lecture on why the public should stop watching and start trusting whatever is happening in rooms they’re not allowed to enter.

And she didn’t just scold the public.

She took a swipe at Republicans for doing the unthinkable: holding a public forum. For putting farmers in a room, on the record, in daylight, and asking what went wrong and how to fix it. In Foster’s world, that’s the real offense. Not breaking the tax system. Not releasing garbage data. Not blindsiding landowners. The crime was making it visible.

She dismissed the press conference as noise, as if demanding accountability in public is some kind of tacky publicity stunt or attention-seeking spectacle. As if transparency itself were vulgar.

But that “noise” was the only reason this mess was acknowledged at all. Republicans turned on the lights. She’s mad because it ruined the comfort of operating in the dark.

The entire email reads like a love letter to secrecy, making her sound less like an elected official and more like a cartoon villain insisting everything was always under control in the secret lair. Because nothing says “trust us with your livelihood” like invisible meetings, unnamed decision-makers, and a process you only find out about after it blows up your tax bill.

The funniest part? The disaster itself was created “behind the scenes.” The flawed data was gathered behind the scenes. The broken appraisal model was approved behind the scenes. The bad guidance was released behind the scenes.

Now she wants credit because another group of people went behind the scenes to partially undo it.

And what is this heroic, shadowy “solution” she’s so proud of?

They revoked the 2025 values. They reinstated the 2020 values. They sent an email to assessors telling them to undo what the state just told them to do. And they announced… a working group.

    That’s it. That’s the fix.

Not reform. Not accountability. Not guardrails. Not structural change. Just a rewind button and a committee.

Revoking the 2025 values isn’t courage. It’s damage control. Reinstating the 2020 values isn’t innovation. It’s pretending the last five years never happened. And immediately notifying assessors is just the state admitting it gave them bad instructions in the first place.

Then comes the working group, the crown jewel of bureaucratic theater. A working group is what politicians create when they want an issue to stop being urgent without actually solving it. It’s a delay tactic with a Zoom link. A place where crises go to die.

And notice how hollow it all is. No apology. No explanation of who approved the flawed appraisal. No consequences for the failure. No timeline for real reform. Just a reset and a promise to “recommend” things later.

Rep. Foster’s email isn’t spin. It’s gaslighting with a state seal.

The state didn’t save the day. The state got caught acting like it was robbing the place, dropped the bag, and now wants a medal for not finishing the crime. They’re not the heroes of this story. They’re the bad guys who got caught with their hand in the cookie jar.

And the kicker — she’s proud of it.

She’s actually bragging that the system only works when nobody watches, nobody asks questions, and nobody turns on the lights. So congratulations, Connecticut.
Your farmland is safe… until the next time shadowy competence decides to quietly reinvent math in a closed room.

Sleep tight knowing the people who gave you a five-figure surprise tax bill are now forming a committee to promise it won’t happen again. Just don’t look too closely.

They work best in the dark.
