By now, most people in Greenwich have already heard all about the plans for a George HW Bush statue to be erected in town.
First Selectman Fred Camillo said former State Senator Scott Frantz came up with the idea to honor the former Greenwich resident with a statue.
In December, the Greenwich Planning & Zoning Commission approved plans for the statue to be located off Greenwich Avenue, with some modifications.
Camillo fully supported the privately-funded effort, and was adamant the statue be located in a prominent location, and as soon as possible.
“I don’t want to delay this any more. We’re going to risk losing this. We have a donor. He’s been pretty clear that it can’t go on too much longer. He’s been very patient with this," said Camillo last year.
The Board of Selectman voted at the end of December; Camillo and Selectwoman Lauren Rabin voted in favor, while Selectwoman Rachel Khanna, concerned about the lack of public comment and design details, abstained.
Khanna didn't object to a statue of the former President based on his character, and noted Bush’s military service, describing him as “very well deserving” of a statue in town.
Not everyone agrees that a RINO globalist / former UN ambassador / former CIA director who called for a "New World Order" is worthy of a statue.
Especially not MAGA supporters who cheered for Trump when he literally campaigned on ending the Bush family political dynasty.
But hey, we're not funding the statue.
And so long as those who are backing the plan have followed the proper process for obtaining approvals and what not, so be it.
However, we do think it's rather important to get clarity on something that just popped up in the Epstein Files before we go erecting a new statue in town.
An email located in a batch released last week by the Department of Justice makes a reference to “George Bush 1” in a complaint filed with the New York Police Department.
The email recipients are blocked out except for former NYPD detective Walter Harkins, who worked on the FBI-NYPD Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force.
It's unclear if the email refers to President George HW Bush or perhaps someone else, but the email has generated a lot of attention online, including speculation that "George Bush 1" is indeed former President George HW Bush.
We are in no position to determine exactly what the files show — or what they do not show.
All we're saying is that before we put up a statue to honor the guy, even if it's using private money, maybe we should wait to find out exactly who the allegation is about and whether it's true?
Because it's really shocking stuff.
And hopefully it's not true.
So why not err on the side of caution, just in case it is true?
