Another Attack on Religious Liberty in Connecticut

It appears that the leadership of the Public Health Committee at the Connecticut General Assembly cannot take “no” for an answer.

For the third year in a row, Representative McCarthy-Vahey, Senator Anwar, and other members of the Public Health Committee — including some Republicans — voted to raise a bill that violates religious liberty in our state. You can view how they voted here.

For more than 100 years, Catholic hospitals in Connecticut have upheld the highest standards of medical care and ethical treatment. They employ thousands of medical professionals, serve patients of all backgrounds, and contribute significantly to the local economy. Yet today, radical abortion and gender ideology dominate the agenda at the State Capitol.

What the Bill Would Do

This bill would force hospitals to permit counseling and referrals for abortion and for irreversible medical procedures that mutilate healthy bodies.

Forcing Christians and Christian institutions to facilitate abortion and genital mutilation violates conscience rights and religious liberty. Instead of being respected for their moral clarity, these institutions — and those who support them — are now being criticized for refusing to participate in the destruction of nascent life and for protecting vulnerable individuals from harmful gender interventions.

While other institutions participate in the intentional destruction of life, Catholic hospitals have been proven right.

Our readers understand that abortion ends the life of a living human being, harms families, and jeopardizes women’s health. And for the record: Catholic medical directives clearly provide that when a medical intervention is necessary to preserve a mother’s life, it is provided promptly and without hesitation at Catholic institutions.

On Gender Ideology: the Evidence is Catching Up

There is no medical consensus supporting gender mutilating surgery for minors.

While other Connecticut hospitals have performed irreversible surgeries on children, Catholic hospitals have not — and that fact infuriates activists. Claims of a medical consensus supporting these procedures are simply false. Institutions that refused to refer for, or perform, these surgeries acted wisely and ethically, protecting children from lifelong harm.

Diversity and Choice in Health Care Matter

True diversity includes allowing hospitals with religious missions to operate according to their deeply held beliefs. Connecticut benefits from having hospitals that offer patients real choice — including care rooted in ethical restraint and respect for human dignity.

One question remains: Will Catholic hospitals defend themselves? In 2024, they did not. Family Institute of Connecticut will closely monitor the upcoming public hearing and keep our members informed. The Public Health Committee may also try again to delete Connecticut's long-standing abortion restrictions. We will be watching carefully.  Volunteers are needed in these efforts! We are only at the beginning of the 2026 legislative session. A helpful primer on the legislative process from our homeschooling allies is attached.
