If you were hoping Connecticut Senate Democrats would address the parade of scandals, arrests, investigations, ballot fraud cases, DUI charges, shopliftin, and grant controversies piling up around their own party since 2020, Wednesday’s press conference was not for you.
Senate President Pro Tem Martin Looney and Majority Leader Bob Duff unveiled their priorities for the 2026 session under the banner of “affordability.” But before you could say “property taxes,” Duff launched into a full-blown federal campaign speech.
Trump, he declared, was running “the greatest con in American history” — presiding over a corrupt authoritarian “regime” threatening democracy itself while billionaires thrived and the country teetered on the brink of chaos.
All this at a press conference about Connecticut legislation.
As Duff put it:
“We have a regime in Washington that thrives on chaos, corruption and confusion.”
Fascinating. You’d almost think corruption was something happening somewhere else — like Mars — and not in their own backyard.
The most revealing moment came when reporters actually tried to bring the conversation back to Connecticut.
Asked about corruption investigations and oversight of state grants — a sore subject given recent scandals — Looney pivoted instantly. Republicans, he said, must be talking about Washington.
Ah yes. The old Connecticut political maneuver: when local scandals get uncomfortable, point vaguely south and shout “federal!”
Looney then assured reporters Democrats “do not condone any illegal behavior” and would work with the governor on oversight — which is about as reassuring as a fox promising to conduct a thorough audit of the henhouse.
That reassurance might carry more weight if the recent record looked different.

But sure — the real corruption problem is apparently a no-bid contract somewhere in Washington.
Looney also deployed Democrats’ favorite historical exhibit: the John Rowland hot-tub scandal.
You know — the one from a quarter-century ago involving a Republican governor who resigned, was convicted, and actually went to prison.
Yes, that one.
“People who live in glass houses should not throw stones,” Looney said, citing Rowland and other long-past GOP scandals.
This argument boils down to: Republicans once had a corrupt governor, therefore Democrats today are immune from criticism.
By that logic, Connecticut should still be worried about witchcraft trials.
Duff insisted Republicans “have nothing to run on,” dismissed corruption concerns as invented, and declared that Democrats were focused on governing — not politics.
Then, in the same breath, he launched into another Trump monologue featuring grift, jets, stock trades, and global conspiracies.
That monologue quickly expanded into a familiar greatest-hits list of villains — ICE agents, private equity, billionaires, artificial intelligence, out-of-state militias, and, inevitably, Donald Trump — rattled off so quickly it felt less like governing and more like an attempt to bury the room in scary buzzwords before anyone could drag the conversation back to Connecticut.
Missing from the list were the things actually squeezing residents every month: property taxes, electric bills, insurance premiums, and the state’s own spending habits — the problems that don’t disappear just because you invoke Trump.
The striking thing about the press conference was not just the deflection, but the tone.
Speaker after speaker cast Connecticut residents as victims of federal policy, corporate greed, or abstract “attacks on democracy.” At one point, a senator declared that “every aspect of the life of our citizen is under attack.”
Yet the Democratic state government controlling taxes, regulations, housing rules, energy mandates, and spending levels — all of which directly drive costs — escaped scrutiny entirely, which is convenient when Democrats are both the cause of the problem and the ones holding the microphone.
Even on fiscal issues, Looney openly suggested that Connecticut’s income tax might be too low and floated higher taxes on high earners as a solution to affordability.
Because nothing says “cost of living relief” like raising taxes.
If Wednesday’s event was any indication, Connecticut Senate Democrats appear to be running a two-pronged strategy for 2026: promise relief on affordability while steering the conversation toward Donald Trump for as long as possible, until the focus drifts away from Connecticut’s own problems.
And when uncomfortable questions about corruption arise?
Invoke a Republican scandal from the Clinton administration, insist you don’t condone wrongdoing, and pivot back to Washington.
Rowland, who paid for his crimes in prison, has now been repurposed as a political shield — Connecticut’s version of “but what about Nixon?”
The irony is hard to miss: a party that insists it is defending democracy seems remarkably uninterested in defending public trust.
Perhaps that was the real message of the press conference.
When you control everything, accountability becomes optional — and rewriting the story is easier than fixing the problem.
