The Bill Authorizing This Should Be Rejected

The Connecticut Democrats are pushing legislation with the Orwellian name “An Act Concerning The Provision Of Equivalent Instruction” (HB 5468) that will require families who wish to withdraw from the public schools for home schooling to receive approval from the Department of Children and Families (DCF). This would be equivalent to appointing a reincarnated Jeffery Epstein to head The Federation to Promote Chastity.

The ostensible impetus for this legislation is the death of Jacqueline “Mimi” Torres-García, an 11-year girl who was withdrawn from the Farmington Public Schools to be home schooled. Her body was discovered later in plastic container. Advocates for this law state this may not have happened had the DCF monitored this poor girl’s situation.

The problem with this reasoning though is that the DCF had been monitoring this child’s welfare since she was born to her mother, Karla Garcia, who was in a detention center at the time of her birth. Jacqueline was placed with relatives until the mother won custody when she was nine, with the approval of the DCF.

But when the police found her body, it was so decomposed that the time of death was estimated to be one year earlier! Where was the DCF?

Now, you will probably think I am making this up, but I am not. The DCF conducted a video call with the mother and concluded everything was fine. But the DCF did not see the child during the call. Why? Because the child was already dead!

Now any reasonable person would state the problem here is that the DCF is incompetent. And this person would have a point. In fact, Connecticut’s top child welfare positions, the Commission of DCF and the Head of the Office of the Child Advocate has been vacant for two years! Our Democratic politicians are too busy mollifying their base of AWFULs (Angry White Female Upscale Liberals) by screeching at President Trump rather than doing the job the taxpayers are paying them to do.

But as the Democrat Rahm Emanuel famously said, “Never let a crisis go to waste.” And the Democrats are not about to allow poor Jacquelyn’s death go to waste without promoting their agenda.

Thus, this legislation allows an organization with the benign-sounding name the State Education Resource Center (SERC) to adjudicate whether homeschoolers have sufficient “demonstration of equivalent instruction.”

And who is the SERC? I’ll give you a clue with a title from the syllabus from their training manual:

In other words, the Democrats proposing this legislation want to make sure their liberal agenda is imposed on homeschoolers.

And what if they don’t? According to the legislation:

The department [DCF] shall disclose records, subject to subsections (b) and (c) of this section, without the consent of the person [the home schooler] who is the subject of the record, to:

The Attorney General, any assistant attorney general or any otherlegal counsel retained to represent the department (DCF) during the course of a legal proceeding involving the department or an employee of the department;

Translation: If home schoolers do not comply, a man with a gun will knock on their door (unless they can afford a high-priced lawyer).

When two-year-old Liam Rivera had his head smashed in and his body stuffed in a plastic bag by the same man who broke his arm when he was six months old, there was no outcry by the Democrats. Why? Because this child’s murderer was by an illegal who was not turned over to ICE (Immigration Custom Enforcement) because the Democrats passed a law that prohibits it. Of course, the DCF was nowhere to be found.

In an ideal world, our public schools would teach our children to read, write, learn basic math and understand history, science, geography and civics. Bullying would be severely punished. Those who prefer other schools would receive vouchers. Then the 25,000 families who opted for homeschooling in Connecticut would be much less. But our education leaders are not concerned with educating our children. They are political activists promoting their world view.
