Yesterday, President Trump sharply criticized Pope Leo XIV on Truth Social, calling him “WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy.”
He also reminded Americans how religious leaders were arrested during COVID lockdowns and blasted the Pope for meeting with Obama ally David Axelrod — “a LOSER from the Left” who supported jailing churchgoers and clerics.
In response, Connecticut Senate President Pro Tempore Martin Looney, a self-described lifelong Catholic, issued a statement declaring:
“Catholics in Connecticut and across this country deserve a President who respects their faith, not one who treats the leader of their Church as a political prop to be attacked when he fails to offer sufficient deference.”
Is this guy serious?
Looney demands that Catholics receive a president who respects their faith, yet he and his Democratic colleagues have spent years waging a direct assault on core Catholic teachings right here in Connecticut.
Why does our faith only matter to the Democrats when they can weaponize it against Donald Trump?
The Catechism of the Catholic Church is crystal clear: “You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish.” Abortion is a direct, grave attack on Catholic belief.

Yet Connecticut Democrats, under Looney’s leadership, have gone to extraordinary lengths to enshrine this “right” to kill the unborn into state law. They’ve turned Connecticut into a destination state for abortions, shielding providers from accountability and litigation. This year they pushed HB 5516 to further entrench and expand these protections.
Looney never uttered a word of protest about these clear attacks on religious conscience.
Instead, after the Dobbs decision, he bragged that Democrats had enacted “additional safeguards” for abortion — including protections so out-of-state women could come here to end their pregnancies.
Abortion is only the beginning. Another direct assault on Catholic teaching comes through forced vaccination policies. The Church has long taught that using “biological material” derived from aborted fetuses is gravely unjust. As a practicing Catholic, I must distance my family from this evil so as not to appear to tolerate or accept it.
Yet in Connecticut, rejecting such vaccines can bar your children from public school. And this very session, Looney’s Democrats are ramming through SB 450 and HB 5044 — bills that would strip away religious exemptions entirely. The Connecticut Catholic bishops have formally opposed these measures. Looney has remained silent.
While he lectures Trump about respecting “more than a billion Catholics,” his own party continues pushing to make Connecticut the next state to legalize assisted suicide — helping doctors kill the elderly and sick. The Church has always condemned this as a grave moral evil (Catechism 2277).

The attacks don’t stop there.
The Catholic Church explicitly opposes medical or social “gender transition” interventions on children — puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries — because they threaten the unique dignity given by God from the moment of conception. Yet Connecticut Democrats are working overtime to protect and expand access to these procedures while shielding the doctors who perform them.
So spare us the sanctimonious lecture, Sen. Looney. Your actions make it painfully obvious:
Catholic beliefs only matter to Connecticut Democrats when they can be used as a political club against Donald Trump. But when it comes to actually respecting the faith of Catholics in this state, you and your party have shown nothing but contempt.
