Today we celebrate Father’s Day where we honor and or remember our fathers who are no longer with us. My father passed away almost 19 years ago, and my father-in- law passed away almost 26 years ago. Every Father’s Day, I still remember them and miss the family Father’s Days that we celebrated together.
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to see up close and place my hand above but not touch the inaugural Bible that was used by the father of our country, George Washington during his presidential inauguration in New York on April 30th, 1789. On that day George Washington became the father of our American democracy when he swore upon a Bible owned by the St. John’s large Number 1 of the Masonic Order of New York.
President Washington swore to uphold the Constitution of the United States, and our Constitutional Republic was born.
This historic Bible, owned by the St. John’s Lodge Number 1, is known as the George Washington Inaugural Bible.
This same Bible, has been used in the inaugurations of Warren G. Harding, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter, and George H. W. Bush. has also been used in the funeral processions of Presidents:t George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, and Zachary Taylor.
The Bible was printed in 1767 in London, England, and contains 103 steel engravings of maps and Old Testament scenes. It is a King James version bible. The Bible was presented to the St. John’s Lodge by Jonathan Hampton in 1770.
The Bible was on display yesterday at the Greenwich Public Library with Freemasons constantly watching over it.
Although swearing upon a Bible may seem to be a formality, it is really an acknowledgment that we, as American democracy, are governed by a higher authority, and that is God Almighty.
It us important that people never forget that in our Declaration of Independence, we state the inalienable rights of man are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These rights are granted to us by our creator, not by governments. We as a people established government to protect these rights. This is what distinguishes democracy from totalitarian dictatorships.
In socialist, communist and fascist, governments, the higher authority is the state. People in these systems are subservient to the powers of the state. It is the highest authority.
In our democracy, the higher authority is God. Unfortunately, there a is a secular trend in our country to remove the God component from the equation. However, when you do that you are granting the highest authority to the state. This empowers the state to revoke the fundamental rights upon which our country was founded.
By being sworn in on a Bible President Washington set the precedent that all Presidents are subject to a higher authority. Presidents are not dictators, nor kings but instead the guardians of our Constitutional Republic.
Happy Fathers Day to the fathers and to the father of our American form of democracy and freedom - George Washington. We are the land of the free because of brave patriots like him and so many others.
