History now presents us the challenge not to repeat its darkest moments

The term, Nihilism, first entered my consciousness in Queens College in the early ‘70s, when assigned the book, ‘Fathers and Sons’ in a World Literature class. That pivotal and insightful novel was written by the great Russian author, Ivan Turgenev in 1862. In his novel, Turgenev was exploring an aspect of the generational conflict that surfaces every few generations. The cyclical generational passages occur every 80 to 100 years, as illuminated brilliantly in the 1997 book ‘The Fourth Turning’ by Strauss and Howe.

The conflict Turgenev played out in his novel focused on when the rising generation in early adulthood decides to reject EVERYTHING about the established societal order. The son returns from university, and to the father’s horror, the son expresses that he is in total opposition to all the civilized societal norms the father and his generation hold dear.

A shocked father has this exchange with his son. “At the present time, we repudiate.” “Everything?” says the father – “yes, Everything.” The father responds, “You’re repudiating everything, or, to put it more exactly, you’re demolishing everything. But then, is it not necessary to be constructive as well?” The son replies, “that, now, is no business of ours. The ground must be cleared, first of all. (italics mine) That’s what the present state of the people demands.” A startling realization for a man who had sent his son off to the University of St. Petersburg. To the father’s profound dismay and alarm, the son was not alone, but was part of a burgeoning movement throughout Russia’s youth. As history shows, that mindset took hold in the Bolshevik Revolution, which played out in 1917, some 55 years after the novel’s publication.

Turgenev coined the term, “Nihilism,” and the individual adherent as a “Nihilist.” The English terms immediately entered the lexicon of writers describing numerous Marxist-driven revolutionary movements ever since. The following illuminates the concept: Rejection of Authority – total defiance toward established societal, political, and religious hierarchies. Utilitarian Focus – only what is practically useful to the movement is worth preserving. Destruction First – embodiment of the philosophy that sweeping negation is the most necessary tool to dismantle corrupt systems before a new society can be built.

A stark definition, embodying the philosophy’s bedrock dystopian vision.

So, why the primer on Nihilism?

For most of the past decade, we have been enduring the antics of the self-styled Socialist ‘Squad’ in congress: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley. Too many observers both within and outside congress have watched the grandstanding, outrageous press conferences, offensive social-media posts, antisemitic statements, and general outrage-drama – and have met it all with little more than occasional righteous indignation. But anyone dismissing their antics as a dyspeptic socialist sideshow has now had that smirk wiped clear off their face. Unseen by the average American, and unexamined by a complicit media, the powerful network of organizers, trainers, anarchists, activists, media-influencers, and most importantly, financiers that propelled these individuals to power and sustain them there, have now had their Nihilistic progeny blossom across the American landscape.

Though the election in NYC was the bell-ringer and grabbed the headlines, “Democratic Socialist” candidates have dominated recent primaries, and are sure to win in big Democrat-run cities across the nation: Denver – Melat Kiros, CD-1 unseated a Liberal incumbent; Los Angeles – Nithya Raman, will face a Progressive Mayor; Seattle – Katie Wilson, incumbent Mayor; Portland – Angelita Morillo, incumbent City Council Leader; D.C. – Lewis George, Mayor. Add to that, a couple choice Senate candidates: Michigan – Abdul El-Sayed; Maine – Graham Platner. And there are dozens more, just one ladder-rung away from grasping major nominations. “Let a hundred flowers bloom,” as Chairman Mao said.

But last month’s crop from New York have provided the most explicit set of chilling public statements, that their alignment with the goals of the Revolutionary Communists of America is no longer in dispute. The Democratic Socialist congressional nominee in NY CD-13, Darializa Chevalier unseated incumbent Adriano Espaillat by calling for the eradication of the United States. Claire Valdez, the nominee in CD-7, on her campaign website calls for citizenship and voting rights for illegal aliens.

Dan Goldman is the sitting ‘Progressive-Democrat’ congressman in NY CD-10, and Brad Lander challenged him in last month’s primary. Both are Jewish. Lander marched with the save-Hamas crowd, pledged to abolish ICE, forgive student all loans, and beat Goldman 2:1 – let that sink in. Zohran Mamdani, the notorious NYC mayor, endorsed all three of these candidates, and their primary wins served as a major flex within a Democrat party that is turning Communist right before the eyes of the nation (at least those with open eyes, who still breath oxygen). Their platform isn’t governance – it is theft…. and anarchy.

There has always been a Nihilist element at work in the American Left, most notably identified as ANTIFA. In recent incarnations, they have been exposing themselves on the streets since the Occupy Wall Street warmup exercises in 2011, erupting in the Fergusson burning/riots, taking over neighborhoods in Seattle and Portland, then evolving into BLM, complete with coast-to-coast city burnings in the summer of 2020. From the 1970s to the emergence of BLM, the Democrat establishment leadership repeatedly encouraged and used the violent street energy to win elections and maintain power. And they were usually able to bottle it up for a few years, until the next challenging election.

But they failed to heed history’s lesson that Nihilist movements can neither be managed for very long, nor peacefully extinguished. The last successful ‘bottling-up’ occurred when Nancy Pelosi took the Squad to the woodshed in late 2019. The Democrat establishment prevailed with their presidential candidate in 2020, but the Marxist agenda dominated during Biden’s horrid ‘presidency.’ Pelosi retired from leadership, and Chuck Schumer continues to attempt to sate the Marxists - but we all know, it’s never enough. Though the writers are calling it a civil-war within the Democrat party, it doesn’t appear to be much of a war – the Marxists are climbing over the bodies of old-bull Democrats at every turn. When the slick-talking Marxists can’t get their way, they readily deploy the Nihilist wing to the front lines, as they did in Minneapolis this winter, and Newark this spring.

The disbursed and isolated appearance of their power centers is deceptive. They are completely networked beneath the surface – their visible centers are simply the outposts or chess pieces on their strategic chessboard. We really don’t know what they may do should they grow desperate or merely anxious about their prospects this November. Their ‘front-line’ has been ICE operations, but they will move it to polling locations if it suits their purposes. We can see that unlike the Reagan years, when they had no elected Democrat Marxists, or outpost cities - they crawled back under their rocks for the duration. Today they are fortified, very much on the march, and can see the end of Trump’s term flickering on the horizon, regardless of mid-term results.

Do not be deceived here in Connecticut. Both Democrat Federal and State caucuses are riddled with Marxist adherents, though only Rosa DeLauro outwardly confirms her allegiance. After all, the Communist Party USA’s Political Action Chairman Joelle Fishman, has campaigned with DeLauro from their Communist nexus on Howe Street in New Haven, the heart of CT-3.

Senator Blumenthal spoke at a Connecticut Communists awards dinner in 2021. Senator Chris Murphy’s been pictured with the same bunch at fundraisers. Jim Himes lived for two months with the Communist Sandinistas in Nicaragua, and wrote a Harvard Thesis to tell us all about it. CT Attorney General William Tong, reveals his Marxists beliefs every few weeks with his subversive pronouncements and lawsuits. With public figureheads like these, we can be certain of the multitudes of collectivists of all stripes, working in the bureaucracies and party apparatus supporting them.

While the ideological allegiances of the CT Democrat officials are coming into more stark focus every week, the true Nihilists have been organizing groups that might be termed, near-Nihilists, angry ideologues, and dupes in training – Lenin’s classic “useful idiots,” throughout our state. ANTIFA is here, and notoriously reveals no public organizing. But you can be sure they have a hand in each of the following public-facing Leftist groups. There are dozens of chapters of Indivisible CT following their Ops-Manual. They are joined by No Kings CT, Action Together CT, and the Leftist firearms training outfit, CT John Brown Gun Club. We have seen most of these groups push their memberships out into highly-publicized rallies, often organized to energize Primary and General elections.

Most members of these groups are our very angry ultra-progressive neighbors, who have been deluded to believe that their screaming, cursing, ridiculing and menacing on our streets is “saving democracy.” There is a sprinkling of violent people within each of these CT groups who are prepared to delude the rest into more kinetic behavior, when necessary – see Delaney Hall in Newark, last month. This all amounts to a poisonous stew being brewed throughout our communities. As we can readily see, the elected Democrats here are personal weaklings. But, as in Minnesota, they stand ready to capitalize on any street violence or fatalities, into which their useful idiots can be duped.

With Mamdani as their current pied piper, the Nihilists are intent on having their day. It does appear they’ve crossed their Rubicon this year. Coordinating together, they will continue to descend our Republic by any available means. MAGA-Conservative Republicans will have to hold the presidency and at least half of Congress in every election, for at least the next decade or more in order to turn the corner on this, the most precarious passage in our nation’s 250-year history.
