For more than a decade, I have been raising concerns about the integrity of Connecticut's elections, especially the vulnerabilities surrounding absentee ballots.
I have introduced and supported legislation, offered amendment after amendment, and argued repeatedly for photo identification, stronger absentee-ballot safeguards, better verification and chain-of-custody procedures, accurate voter rolls, and serious consequences for people who violate our election laws.
Again and again, the response to those concerns has been that election fraud either doesn't happen or is too insignificant to justify stronger protections.
Bridgeport should have ended that argument.
In 2023, surveillance video captured improper handling of absentee ballots during the Democratic mayoral primary. A Superior Court judge found the evidence serious enough to overturn the primary and order a new one. Criminal prosecutions followed, including allegations that political operatives possessed voters' ballots, filled them out, instructed voters whom to support, or improperly submitted them. One individual connected to that election pleaded guilty to absentee-ballot offenses just last week.
And now there is another deeply troubling allegation out of Bridgeport.
The investigation should determine exactly what happened and who violated the law. But this is precisely why election safeguards matter.
I have never argued that every election is fraudulent or that every absentee ballot is suspicious. My argument has always been much simpler:
Your vote belongs to you.
No political operative should be filling it out for you, pressuring you, possessing it unlawfully, or interfering with your choices.
Every qualified voter should be able to vote easily and confidently, and every legitimate vote should count exactly once.
That is why I will continue fighting for photo ID, secure absentee-ballot procedures, citizenship and voter-roll safeguards, meaningful enforcement, and real penalties for election crimes.
Election integrity is not about making voting harder.
It is about making cheating harder.
And after everything Connecticut has witnessed in Bridgeport, no one should be pretending these vulnerabilities are merely theoretical.
