Attorney General William Tong joined an open letter to the legal community that expresses support for law firms subject to President Trump's orders on holding attorneys and law firms accountable for unethical conduct when litigating against the Federal government or pursuing baseless partisan attacks.

Trump's memorandum instructs the Attorney General to:

• Prioritize seeking sanctions against attorneys and law firms that engage in frivolous, unreasonable, or vexatious litigation against the United States.
• Prioritize enforcement of regulations governing attorney conduct and discipline. This directive also applies to the Secretary of Homeland Security.
• Refer attorneys and law firms for disciplinary action when their conduct in Federal court or before any component of the Federal government appears to violate professional conduct rules.
• Recommend additional consequences, including reassessing security clearances or terminating federal contracts, for attorneys and law firms that engage in conduct deserving of sanctions or other disciplinary action.
• Review attorney and law firm conduct over the last eight years in litigation against the Federal government and recommend further actions if misconduct is identified.

Executive Orders have specifically targeted Paul Weiss, Perkins Coie, Jenner & Block, WilmerHale, and Susman Godfrey for things like "weaponizing the American legal system" and "degrading the quality of American elections" and "undermining the effectiveness of the United States military through the injection of political and radical ideology."

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong and his coalition of attorneys general, are now disappointed to see "that several of the country’s largest law firms have capitulated" to the Trump Administration.

The coalition issued an open letter to the legal community after some of the nation’s largest law firms struck “deals” with the President and his Administration that allegedly "commit the firms to provide free legal services to support the Trump Administration’s priorities."

“Donald Trump’s attempts to bully the legal profession into silence and submission leave no choice but to fight back. He relentlessly targets attorneys to exact political revenge on those who defended the integrity of our elections. He arrests and perp-walks a sitting judge on the thinnest of charges. He mocks and defies court orders. These are foundational attacks on not just our legal profession—but on the rule of law itself. I do not minimize for one second just how hard this is, but we must never surrender, never quit and never back down,” said AG Tong.

In the letter the coalition argues that President Trump’s executive orders violate the Constitution. 

"The executive orders retaliate against lawyers based on protected speech and association, and they discriminate based on viewpoint.  The orders also are inconsistent with the right to effective counsel, offend basic principles of due process, and undermine bedrock rule-of-law principles.  The letter points out that these unconstitutional attacks on the legal profession are an attack on our justice system and pave the way towards authoritarianism."

The coalition highlights that four law firms – Perkins Coie, Jenner & Block, WilmerHale, and Susman Godfrey – filed suit against the Trump Administration and obtained court orders temporarily blocking Trump's orders.

The letter calls upon other law firms and lawyers to join the resistance, and reject any attempt to work with President Trump and his Administration.

The letter specifically calls out the law firms "that have surrendered in the face of the President’s demands" and argues that they "have only emboldened his dangerous and damaging attacks on the legal profession and the rule of law."

The Attorneys General of New Jersey, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia signed the letter.
