The Department of Homeland Security ("DHS") has identified a list sanctuary jurisdictions that are undermining the rule of law and endangering the lives of both Americans and Law Enforcement.

Per DHS, "Executive Order 14287: Protecting American Communities from Criminal Aliens requires that a list of states and local jurisdictions that obstruct the enforcement of Federal immigration laws (sanctuary jurisdictions) be published. Sanctuary jurisdictions including cities, counties, and states that are deliberately and shamefully obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration laws endangering American communities. Sanctuary cities protect dangerous criminal aliens from facing consequences and put law enforcement in peril."

Sanctuary jurisdictions were determined by assessing factors like compliance with federal law enforcement, information restrictions, and legal protections for illegal aliens.

Each jurisdiction on the DHS list will receive formal notification of non-compliance with Federal statutes.

DHS demands that these jurisdictions immediately review and revise their policies to align with Federal immigration laws and renew their obligation to protect American citizens, not dangerous illegal aliens.

Not only did the state of Connecticut make the DHS Sanctuary Jurisdiction List, so did the cities of East Haven, Hamden, Hartford, New Haven, New London, and Windham.

Complicating matters is the fact that just this month, Democrats in Hartford, both in the House and in the Senate, voted to advance HB 7529, which would actually "strengthen" the state's sanctuary laws by adding even more restrictions on law enforcement’s ability to share information with federal agencies, further increasing the risk of shielding criminal illegal immigrants from deportation.

The bill also introduces a provision that would actually allow individuals to sue municipalities that "violate" the Trust Act -- meaning that towns could be sued for following federal immigration law and individual taxpayers would get stuck holding the bill.

Sen. Rob Sampson said that the "strengthened" Trust Act would actually make Connecticut a "super sanctuary" state.

"By further shielding violent criminal illegal immigrants, it [HB 7529] now puts our state in a position where we're attracting both law-abiding immigrants and violent criminals alike," said Sampson. "There is a reason why I coined the term 'Super Sanctuary State' and this policy proves it."

Sen. Sampson and Senate Republicans offered multiple amendments to counteract the increased public safety threat posed by HB 7529's provisions, but the amendments were rejected mostly along party lines.

The bill has moved onto the governor's desk to be signed into law.

Republicans are urging Governor Lamont to veto HB 7259.

But frankly that doesn't go far enough -- the whole Trust Act needs to be repealed.
