Connecticut Attorney General William Tong and Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced that Connecticut and Rhode Island will sue the Trump administration in Rhode Island federal court today to overturn the stop work order issued on August 22 halting construction of Revolution Wind.
Tong called the Trump Administration's decision to shut down construction on Revolution Wind "utterly unlawful and baseless and frankly senseless and stupid," so he's looking to stop "Donald Trump and his all-out war on wind and wind power."
Tong claimed his office has "been on the frontlines every single day fighting for ratepayers."
"We all know we pay way too much for electricity in this state," Tong said. Then he promised his team of lawyers was working hard to try to protect consumers from high electricity rates... so hard that nothing has changed with that ~30% public benefits charge.
They way Tong sees it, the "war" on wind power is a war on ratepayers -- he has no concern about the environmental impacts, the high cost of wind power, the issues with non-recyclable parts, etc., nor does he acknowledge other alternative energy sources that may be more cost effective and less harmful to the environment than wind.
"This is yet another attack by this President on Connecticut and Connecticut families and on our wallets and on our pocketbooks and on our household budgets and on Connecticut families," claimed Tong. He added that claims that windmills might present national security concerns were just "garbage."
As a reminder the Revolution Wind project was anticipated to contribute 2.5 percent of the region’s electricity supply beginning in 2026.
Tong's complaint asks that the court declare the stop work order unlawful and block the Trump administration from halting Revolution Wind’s development.
“Trump wants to mothball the project, send workers home, and saddle Connecticut families with millions of dollars in higher energy costs. This kind of erratic and reckless governing is blatantly illegal, and we’re suing to stop it,” said Tong before other democrats piled on.
“It’s been nearly two weeks, and the Trump Administration still has not explained or justified its decision to halt construction of Revolution Wind," complained Gov. Ned Lamont. He said he would, "act to preserve this vital project and protect the energy future of Connecticut and the entire New England region.”
Sen. Richard "I steal valor" Blumenthal called the shut down “insane, illogical, and illegal" and applauded Tong's "swift action against the Trump Administration.”
Sen. Chris Murphy called the shutdown a "giveaway to the oil industry" so that Trump's "billionaire donors can make an extra buck."
Congressman Joe Courtney alleged the stop work order would cause "immediate significant harm" and said the national security concerns had been "vetted and mitigated by Ørsted, the Department of Defense, the Coast Guard, Rhode Island, and Connecticut."
"As such, there was no justification for such a drastic action by the Trump Administration," claimed Courtney.
