Connecticut Democrats are facing the "god-awful tragedy" caused by the loss of SNAP benefits... by calling on Republicans to join them in blaming Trump for the Democrat-led shutdown in a press conference.

State Sen. President Pro Tempore Martin Looney also thinks Trump is trying to cut off health insurance subsidies that are likely to expire at the end of the year in order to "fund tax cuts" for the very, very wealthy.

"We should all be very clear that this is the first time in American history that the President of the United States is willfully starving his own people," said State Sen. Maj. Leader Bob Duff. "There is no reason or need for this chaos or this confusion or to not provide food benefits for the people of this nation and the people of Connecticut."

Duff acknowledged that Republicans and Democrats have "vastly different ideas" about what is happening to our country right now under President Trump.

And while Republicans are generally happy with Trump, Duff thinks Trump is "destroying the fabric of our country just like the East Wing has been destroyed in the White House."

Next up was State Sen. Saud Anwar -- the guy who is literally "starving for attention" by taking what he calls "the SNAP challenge" where he eats on only $6.20 a day and virtue signals about every meal on Facebook.

Anwar visited a local food pantry and said he saw people who were really scared about losing SNAP benefits. He said it was not a partisan issue. He just couldn't believe that the country is even having a conversation on the topic... of making sure that SNAP benefits go to legitimate American citizens and not to illegals.

At one point in his comments, Anwar seemed to suggest that if this happened during a war, that Trump might be guilty of war crimes. Then he proceeded to draw a comparison to the Hunger Games, where the rich have it all, and the poor are left struggling and starving.

The way State Sen. Julie Kushner sees it, Trump has decided to "pit people who are food insecure against people who will lose their health insurance."

She boasted that Democrats are standing up to make sure that everyone in the country can have health care and health insurance -- everyone, including illegals, apparently.

State Sen. Jorge Cabrera said the problem with SNAP is "real" and also framed it as a "human issue" not a political issue.

"We are literally by choice allowing people to go hungry," claimed Cabrera. "We are at a very dangerous place in our country where we are elevating our own political choices, our own political interest, above the human needs of folks."

"We have a President of the United States that lacked moral courage, that lacked compassion and that lacked empathy, and so we need a moral defibrillator to shock his heart so that he could come to the understanding that nobody's better than us," said State Sen. Herron Gaston. "We're not a country that would rather invest in gilded, powerful golden walls rather than look at people who have empty cupboards at night."

He thinks that government has a "fiduciary responsibility and a moral obligation" to feed everyone in the country.

State Sen. MD Rahman called the situation "outrageous" and "nonsense" and demanded that Trump release the needed money ASAP.

Looney basically wants to go back to the status quo, fund SNAP as it was before, and just ignore the money going toward illegals, even though nearly half of illegal-headed households are using food assistance benefits intended for legitimate citizens.

About The SNAP Lawsuit...

The democrat publicity stunt comes a day after Attorney General William Tong joined a coalition of 21 other attorneys general and three governors in filing a lawsuit against the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and its Secretary Brooke Rollins for suspending SNAP.

He led a press conference yesterday about his 38th legal action against the Trump Admin, and his office issued a press release on the matter with statements from the full Connecticut delegation to DC... so you know democrats are mad.

Tong accused Trump of "willfully and intentionally starving people when federal law says you shall not starve them" and "weaponizing hunger."

"It is wrong to starve people into submission, and that is what this President is doing," claimed Tong.

“Trump is stealing food from hungry Connecticut families—it’s unconscionable, unlawful, and we’re going to court today to free these funds," Tong said. "Trump has no right to block these funds and we’re not going to let him use our families as political bargaining chips.”

“Thanks to President Trump and Congressional Republicans’ cruel political games, Connecticut families will struggle to put food on the table starting November 1. This is not inevitable, they are deciding to let people starve when there is a contingency in place to prevent it," said Sen. Richard "Danang Dick" Blumenthal. "No one in America should ever go hungry because of politics.”

“Trump and congressional Republicans are already pushing millions of Americans off a health care cliff and now they want to force working families to go hungry. The administration has the authority to open up these emergency funds for SNAP and the only reason they won’t do it is because Trump thinks he’s a king who can pick and choose what services he wants to fund. It’s not just heartless – it’s illegal,” said a TDS-addled Sen. Chris Murphy.

“Donald Trump has the funding to pay SNAP benefits on time, but he’s choosing to hold hungry families hostage instead," said Congressman John Larson. "But Connecticut shouldn’t pay the price for this president’s failure to govern."

"I strongly support this lawsuit by the State of Connecticut. After making the largest cut to food assistance in U.S. history in the “Big Beautiful Bill”, the Trump Administration is now unnecessarily cutting off SNAP benefits," said Congressman Joe Courtney. "It’s a cruel tactic that will have immediate harm when families are no longer able to buy groceries"

“People across the country are struggling to make ends meet as the cost of groceries skyrockets,” said Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro. “The Trump administration is freezing funding already enacted into law to feed hungry Americans while providing tens of billions of dollars to Argentina, private jets, and a golden ballroom. I am grateful Connecticut Attorney General Tong is taking the fight to court. The Trump Administration must release funding for SNAP.”

"I'm proud of Connecticut and Attorney General Tong for suing to undo the Trump Administration's cruelty in withholding billions of dollars in contingency funding for SNAP benefits," said Congressman Jim Himes, who boasted about the $3 million in emergency funding going to Connecticut Foodshare. "But these funds are only a temporary solution—the Administration must reverse course and restore this critical support that puts food on the table for seniors and individuals with disabilities."

"I thank Attorney General Tong for joining other Democrat leaders across the nation in filing a lawsuit to force the release of available contingency funds so the 42 million people who rely on SNAP do not go hungry,” said Congresswoman Jahana Hayes.

Despite those strong feeling about SNAP, Democrats voted for the 13th time on Tuesday to continue their shutdown.

“The simplest way to end it and the simplest way to make sure that people are getting the food assistance they need is to pick up the bill and give us five votes,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said in an exclusive interview to the NY Post before Senate failed to reopen the government in a 54-45 vote.
