The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division has now filed 18 federal lawsuits against states and local governments that have failed to come forward with their voter registration lists when requested to do so.
The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division announced Friday that it had filed new lawsuits against four states – Colorado, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Nevada– the latest in the Trump administration’s effort to ensure states adhere to federal election laws.
“States have the statutory duty to preserve and protect their constituents from vote dilution,” said Harmeet K. Dhillon, Assistant Attorney General of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “At this Department of Justice, we will not permit states to jeopardize the integrity and effectiveness of elections by refusing to abide by our federal elections laws. If states will not fulfill their duty to protect the integrity of the ballot, we will.”
The four states join 12 others: six states in September – California, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania – and six others on December 2 – Delaware, Maryland, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.
Additionally, the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division sued one locality – Fulton County, Georgia – “for records related to the 2020 election,” according to the most recent announcement.
Dhillon said during an interview Saturday on Newsmax’s “Rob Schmitt Tonight” that both Democrat-led and Republican-led states have pushed back against the Trump administration’s request to produce their voter rolls.
“I want all citizens to accept the outcome of our elections,” she said. “After the 2020 election, we found that there were so many irregularities that people just weren’t, and so I think it was important for the DOJ to do its job. Now, we have limited jurisdiction, but that jurisdiction includes a handful of federal voting statutes. One is the Help America Vote Act. Another is a portion of the Civil Rights Act. And the Attorney General has the right to get this data from the states without having to justify her reasoning. And so we’re doing that.”
Appearing on “The Benny Show” last week, Dhillon stood firm against those who shrug at a few dead people or illegal aliens on the voter rolls.
“Any single vote that dilutes the vote of an American citizen – when you and I go to the polls an election can be won or lost by a single vote – and we are all entitled to know that our votes are being counted only and equally with only American citizens,” she asserted, adding, “and we will do this at this DOJ.”
In June, the DOJ also announced it had filed a lawsuit against Robert Page, the Orange County, California, Registrar of Voters for refusing to turn over to the department records concerning the removal of non-citizens from the county’s voter registration list and for violating the Help America Vote Act by failing to keep an accurate list of voters.
“Voting by non-citizens is a federal crime, and states and counties that refuse to disclose all requested voter information are in violation of well-established federal elections laws,” Dhillon said at the time of the Orange County lawsuit. “Removal of non-citizens from the state’s voter rolls is critical to ensuring that the State’s voter rolls are accurate and that elections in California are conducted without fraudulent voting. The Department of Justice will hold jurisdictions that refuse to comply with federal voting laws accountable.”
In the announcement regarding the lawsuits filed on December 2, Attorney General Pam Bondi said that “[a]ccurate voter rolls are the cornerstone of fair and free elections, and too many states have fallen into a pattern of noncompliance with basic voter roll maintenance.”
“The Department of Justice will continue filing proactive election integrity litigation until states comply with basic election safeguards,” Bondi added.
