Last night at 5:55 pm, Republican members of the Government Administration & Elections Committee were hit with 52 bills to review ahead of today’s committee meeting.
Then, at 9:44 am, we received notice that 19 of those 52 bills were being substituted with new language.
This is exactly the kind of rushed process that undermines transparency and makes it nearly impossible to properly review legislation before it moves forward.
Included in these last-minute changes are major revisions to H.B. 5001, an expansive elections bill that would significantly reshape our voting system, including changes to absentee voting and ballot procedures while continuing to ignore critical election integrity protections.
When sweeping changes to our election laws are dropped on legislators hours before a hearing, it raises serious concerns about both process and policy.
The people of Connecticut deserve a process that is thoughtful, transparent, and gives lawmakers adequate time to do their jobs responsibly.
