Yesterday, Senator Ryan Fazio called on the Connecticut Republican Party to organize a series of five gubernatorial debates ahead of the State Convention, similar to the successful format used during the competitive 2018 process to test candidates, sharpen their message, and give delegates an opportunity to engage with those looking to lead the Republican ticket.
Fazio’s full letter to Chairman Proto is below:
Chairman Proto,
I am writing to formally request that the Connecticut Republican Party organize a series of five gubernatorial debates prior to the State Convention, with one held in each of our five congressional districts.
The CTGOP successfully implemented a similar format during the last contested gubernatorial cycle in 2018, hosting a series of regional forums that allowed candidates to present their ideas and engage with voters. Those events provided a valuable platform for candidates to be tested, to sharpen their message, and to connect directly with the grassroots across the state.
We have a great opportunity to build on that model this cycle. Holding a series of debates across each congressional district would ensure that delegates and voters have the opportunity to hear directly from the candidates, understand where we stand on the issues that matter most, and make an informed decision at the convention.
Quite simply, if a candidate cannot handle questions from Republicans or debate with fellow Republicans, they will have no chance of taking on Ned Lamont and the Democrats in November.
It would also demonstrate our party’s commitment to an open, transparent process and help strengthen our nominee heading into the general election. Unlike the Democrats’ coronation of Kamala Harris, we should be striving for a bottom-up process.
I would welcome the opportunity to work with you, the Party, and my fellow candidates to make this series of debates a success.
Sincerely,
Ryan Fazio
