"Folks, we did it," said State Rep. Matt Blumenthal, with his eyes literally popping out of his head. "If I look a little haggard, it's because I just got off the House floor where I spent eight hours last night and more time today leading debate on a bill to allow absentee voting for all in our state."

Blumenthal called it a "transformational advance in ensuring that our elections and our democracy are safe, secure and accessible for every eligible voter."

Because nothing says "safe and secure" like absentee voting for all, where ballots are cast without direct observation, making them vulnerable to forgery, coercion, "ballot harvesting" and pressure on voters (especially elderly, disabled, or low-income).

Then there are issues with the chain of custody and voter verification, ballots could get sent to the wrong person, votes might get lost in the mail, and election results could be delayed.

It's not free, could strain local clerks, increase printing/mailing costs, and require more signature verification and curing processes.

But don't worry, because this is about protecting democracy, right?

That's not all democrats stuffed into HB 5001!

"It's no secret that the President has threatened our elections," claimed Blumenthal as he turned on the gaslight. "He wants Republicans to take over and nationalize our elections and close allies have urged him to send ICE and other federal law enforcement officials to intimidate or interfere with voters at the polls."

Democrats added an amendment restricting federal, state and local law enforcement operations from operating within 250 feet of a polling place or sensitive election site in Connecticut. It's enforced by stiff criminal penalties at the state level.

"And now, the bill goes on to the Senate. The right to vote is sacred," said Blumenthal. "It's the right on which all other rights depend."
