Pride Is Back: Enfield Flag Policy Repealed, Town Council Member Said American Flag Was Not Inclusive Enough

A Connecticut democrat just said the American flag wasn't "inclusive" enough.

Cindy Mangini, a realtor who has served on the Enfield town council as an elected official for over 20 years, was offering comments during the May 18, 2026, Town Council meeting about repealing the town's flag policy which prevented the pride flag from being flown.

"We talk about diversity," said Mangini. "And granted the American flag should be inclusive for all people but it is not, not while we have to fight constantly to respect people of different races, religions, sexual orientation."

She argued in favor of flying the pride flag, saying it was a freedom of speech issue and an important sign to a community that's "feeling isolated and threatened."

In January 2024, the Enfield Town Council (then under Republican majority) passed a flag policy limiting displays on town-owned buildings and flagpoles to only the United States flag, the Connecticut state flag, the POW/MIA flag, and U.S. military branch flags.

The policy effectively prohibited flying the pride flag and other non-governmental flags, reversing a prior 2022 resolution that had allowed the rainbow pride flag to fly during June for Pride Month.

The Town Council voted on May 18 to repeal the policy and approved a new resolution allowing the pride flag to be displayed once again at town-owned properties, citing updated legal advice that there was no significant risk of compelled additional flag displays.

The Council also read a proclamation, demonstrating their commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion by dedicating June as Pride Month.
