Melissa Ramirez, the illegal alien charged in the fatal crash that resulted in the deaths of Bridgeport police officer Cooper Whiteside and his girlfriend Brittany Islami, appeared in Danbury Superior Court today.
The Centinal spoke with Ramirez’s attorney, Dan Thibodeau, before the proceeding. He indicated he was new to the case and therefore not familiar with all of the details. He expressed to the Centinal that nothing good happens on the roads after midnight, and wondered why Whiteside and Islami were on the road so late. This same concern was not expressed about why Ramirez was on the road at the same time.
Judge Seán P. McGuinness ordered that the $300,000 bond, which had been reduced from $500,000 during the arraignment last week, be posted at the court in order to address any additional conditions.
Danbury State’s Attorney Stacey Haupt Miranda stated clearly during the proceeding that Ramirez did not have a driver’s license and indicated a new charge could potentially be added as a result.
“After further investigation, it was determined that somehow, some way, there are databases throughout the system that had merged the personal information of (Ramirez) with the personal information of another person with a similar name and date of birth,” Miranda said Tuesday. She suggested there could be “various ways” in which to “speculate as to how that happened” but promised that the person inside the courtroom today is the same person involved in the crash.
Miranda also stated that Ramirez “does not, nor has she ever had a driver’s license” and could face an additional charge of operating a vehicle without a license.
Today’s proceeding was called on such short notice that Bridgeport Police were caught off guard, and not present to represent their fallen brother.
The next hearing date was set for August 31, 2026.
Four members of Ramirez’s family attended the proceeding today.
On the way out of the courthouse, the Centinal had an opportunity to talk with the family. They were completely bewildered about the events that just took place inside the courtroom, especially the new potential charge of driving without a license.
“She did have a license,” Charly Ramirez Romero told the Centinal while shrugging his shoulders. “This is why we’re confused.”
Charly explained to the Centinal that Melissa obtained a driver’s license approximately "two to three years earlier" when she was setting up a landscaping business. The family is dumbfounded about how she could be charged for driving without a license when they said with certainty that she obtained a license directly from the DMV. Now the family is wondering whether they should attempt to get the case thrown out due to the alleged issues with the police warrant.
"It's very blurry," Charly said. "It's a mess."
