Federal immigration agents conducted enforcement operations in Danbury on Monday, August 24, and into Tuesday, focusing on areas like Kennedy Park where day laborers regularly gather.
HatCityBLOG, Danbury Al Dia and others on Facebook reported on the action throughout the day and continue to do so today.
Greater Danbury Area Unites for Immigrants (DUFI) issued a "Community Alert" warning people not to open the door if an immigration agent is knocking. A subsequent post alleged that ICE made 16 detentions on Monday, including seven at Kennedy Park, with agents allegedly returning to the park twice.
More operations unfolded today while DUFI asserted, "we cannot tolerate masked agents violently abducting and racially profiling our communities."
Videos and photos from HatCityBLOG captured agents near dark vehicles—many with out-of-state plates—making arrests on Elm Street near Kennedy Park, at a McDonald’s, and near Stop & Shop on Lake Avenue.
Footage even emerged from allegedly inside the transport vehicle holding the detainees.
Similar smaller scale activity was reported in Stamford yesterday, including sightings near Noble Street exit 6, and again on Tuesday.
Connecticut’s sanctuary policies prevent local police from assisting with these operations, forcing ICE to operate independently while Democrats decry the results.
HatCityBLOG footage shows progressive activists recording with phones while taunting agents, “I got your face bro,” calling them “pussies” and “bitch.” A man in a black hat can be seen repeatedly calling ICE agents “f*cking Nazis” and “white nationalist piece of shit” in one of the videos.
Agents can be seen methodically handling detentions in the video while the activist filmed in the agents' faces. DUFI and pages like Danbury Al Dia flooded social media with #QUEDATE_EN_CASA warnings, abandoned vehicle photos, and calls to stay home—framing routine enforcement as “abductions” of “neighbors.”
In a DUFI clip circulating from on the scene today, an activist repeatedly gets in an ICE officer’s face while filming, and asking if the agent had a warrant. The agent tells her it's not her business. Another man in the background can be heard shouting, "who the f*ck are you guys?" while the agents calmly respond, “We're ICE" "Can't you read?” — before continuing the detention without escalating.
DUFI's post states: "We cannot tolerate this violence on our streets. Let’s make this clear - Danbury is a city where all of our neighbors are welcome. Danbury is a city whose strength comes from our diversity. Our high schools speak over 50 languages, one third of our neighbors are foreign born. A piece of paper does not define your worth and does not determine your dignity."
Democrats responded with the usual tone-deaf rhetoric protecting those here illegally.
Gov. Ned Lamont admitted the arrests happened but claimed they “did not appear to target violent criminals,” adding: “Our communities are not made safer by rounding up people at random to fill a quota—laborers seeking work… This does not reflect the values of Connecticut.”
Danbury’s Democratic legislative delegation (Sen. Julie Kushner, Reps. Farley Santos and Bob Godfrey) issued a statement lamenting “fear that is tearing at the fabric of our community” and praising immigrants while noting the Trust Act bars local help. State Sen. Julie Kushner noted her "anger reached a new level" when "ICE attempted to take the parents of my friend." State Rep. Santos called the actions “inhumane” against “hardworking people.”
Congresswoman Jahana Hayes said her office was “aware of the elevated ICE presence,” pledged to “support constituents,” and emphasized “the dignity and valuable contributions of all who call Danbury home.” Hayes claims these individuals “followed the law as written,” but apparently that excludes the federal immigration laws they violated by coming here illegally.
Mayor Roberto Alves—who arrived undocumented as a child from Brazil after his parents overstayed a visa—urged residents to “remain calm,” know their rights, check on neighbors, and declared “Fear does not get to define Danbury.”
Alves, the Chair of the Connecticut Democrat Party, followed up today with a video, claiming that ICE just targeted "random people" in the operations yesterday, mainly people who looked like they were "from Central and South America." He insisted that immigration actions were intended to "divide us" and suggested passing out "know your rights" cards to protect "everyone" in the community.
Anne Weisberg, the State Rep. Candidate for House District 108 (New Fairfield, Sherman, New Milford, & Danbury) issued a statement on the ICE operations while wearing a DUFI t-shirt. She claimed that illegal aliens in Connecticut contributed over a billion dollars in federal, state and local taxes, and promised to strengthen the Trust Act.
FAIR, the Federation for American Immigration Reform, acknowledges that illegal immigrants pay some taxes—roughly $31 billion nationally—but that figure is dwarfed by the $182 billion in costs they impose, leaving American taxpayers with a net burden of over $150 billion a year.
In Connecticut alone, FAIR’s analysis puts the net annual cost of illegal immigration at approximately $1.3 billion after accounting for education, healthcare, welfare, and enforcement.
Meanwhile, some Facebook commenters in the community went further.
One warned, “In November, this ice theater will come to an end, you will be the persecuted ones.” Some posted the "f*ck ICE Abolish ICE" line frequently repeated by Democrats, framing ICE as "evil" "hunters" who break apart families. Others made threats like, “If i see ICE, its on f*ckin sight bang bang” and "one day... the so-called ICE will pay."
These are not the voices of a peaceful, law-abiding community under siege—they are reactions from those who treat immigration law itself as the problem itself.
HatCityBLOG itself became a target.
Raúl Fernández Rodríguez accused the page of generating “views at the expense of our Latin community’s pain” and “giving space to racists,” then added a thinly veiled warning: “We will have to react again and make them feel who drives the economy of this city.”
Connecticut has become a magnet for illegal aliens precisely because of policies like the Trust Act and the political class’s refusal to distinguish between legal immigrants and those who entered or remained unlawfully.
Day laborers at Kennedy Park waiting for cash work are not “random” targets; they are in the country illegally, undercutting wages and taking jobs that could go to legal workers. ICE is not “rounding people up to fill a quota.” It is enforcing federal law that Democrats in Hartford and Washington have spent years undermining.
The Centinal contacted ICE for a statement regarding on-going operations in Connecticut, but have not yet received a response.
Thank you to the ICE agents who showed up in Danbury and Stamford this week and all summer long for that matter. While local politicians issue statements about “dignity” and “values,” federal officers are, as they say, "doing the work" of removing people who have no legal right to be here. That is how you begin cleaning up Connecticut.
