U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) dropped a bombshell Tuesday night that every Connecticut taxpayer should read twice.

An illegal alien handed a “drive-only” license by the State of Connecticut ran a stop sign in Ohio and killed 29-year-old Austin J. Karr Grimes. The driver, Washington G. Naula Ochoa, now faces vehicular homicide charges. Moreno’s office confirmed the man had no legal status in the United States—yet Connecticut gave him the keys anyway.

Moreno didn’t just tweet. He sent Governor Ned Lamont a formal two-page letter demanding answers and an apology.

“A 29-year-old Ohioan was killed because an illegal alien ran a stop sign,” Moreno wrote. “If it were not for policy you championed, which allows illegal aliens to receive a ‘drive-only’ license, this young man may have reached his destination.”

Moreno stated that Connecticut has issued nearly 60,700 of these licenses. That’s 60,700 additional opportunities for people who entered the country illegally to get behind the wheel and drive through other states.

"You should be ashamed of this policy and its dangerous consequences, yet your support for illegal aliens knows no bounds," Moreno wrote.

Lamont’s administration has spent years defending and expanding this policy. Two years ago the governor even pushed to strip the “drive-only” marking off the licenses so they would look identical to those issued to U.S. citizens. Republicans warned at the time that the change would make it easier for non-citizens to vote. Democrats dismissed the concern. Moreno is now asking the obvious question: Why is Lamont more protective of illegal aliens than U.S. citizens?

The senator gave Lamont five days to answer four specific questions:

• How many illegal aliens currently hold Connecticut drive-only licenses?
• How many illegal aliens with drive-only licenses have committed crimes?
• How many illegal aliens with drive-only licenses have registered to vote or actually voted?
• How much has the program to give drivers licenses to illegal aliens cost Connecticut taxpayers?

Don’t hold your breath for an honest reply. Hartford’s response is always the same: lecture the rest of the country about “compassion” while exporting the consequences. Ohio families are now paying the price for Connecticut’s virtue-signaling.

This is unfortunately the predictable result of a state government that treats American citizenship as an afterthought and illegal presence as a protected class. While President Trump has taken historic steps to restore border control, sanctuary states like Connecticut keep undermining those efforts with policies like this.

Lamont should issue the apology Moreno demanded. More importantly, he should repeal the drive-only license statute and stop pretending that handing government documents to people who broke federal law is a public-safety measure.

One dead Ohioan is already one too many. Connecticut’s experiment in open-borders driving privileges has claimed a life outside its own borders. The governor owns this.
