CT Centinal reporters and sources have been monitoring the Westport public waterfront areas for evidence of illegal abuse of these resources and it is not hard to find.
Last week we disclosed illegal night-harvesting of shellfish at the Old Mill location in Westport.
Other types of abuse are also rampant.
Fishing is legal along the shoreline, as long as you respect limits. Sources who are on the Beach often tell us these limits are not followed by illegal immigrants fishing.
In addition, large numbers of illegal immigrants have been seen with out-of-state plates over the last few weeks congregating on the beach, cooking and consuming most of the picnic tables and do not have beach parking passes. Many times, the tables are pushed together for the large number of migrants, and therefore are rendered unusable by Westport residents.
They also have been reported by sources to be clamming often on South Beach at Compo, which is off-limits per Westport shellfish regulations.
One source told us he approached a woman with a bag of clams and a shovel openly digging up shellfish at low tide, and confronted her. She professed ignorance to the regulations.
No one is stopping them. At all.
