Miguel Castro, the former Meriden councilman and chairman of the Connecticut Hispanic Democratic Caucus, has decided that enforcing U.S. immigration law is nothing short of “white supremacy,” “Christian nationalism,” “Jim Crow 2.0 segregation tactics,” and “systemic ethnic cleansing.”

That’s the actual language he used when fire-protection workers from Tolland-based Innovative Services were accused of pointing out illegal workers on a Meriden job site.

Castro’s post demanded the public harass the company, asked whether “corporate policy allow[s] employees to weaponize ICE,” and urged the site owner to fire the contractor.

He previously posted an “ALERT” that ICE was conducting traffic stops and parking-lot operations in Meriden, calling it “a direct assault on the freedom of our community members.” His replies doubled down: current enforcement is “fundamentally inhumane” and an extension of “white supremacist ideologies aimed at systemic ethnic cleansing.” The “true threat,” he wrote, is people who support a “rogue agency.”

The comments were overwhelmingly in favor of ICE doing its job.

A week earlier Castro complained about the Trump administration's efforts to start enforcing the long-standing federal rule that commercial drivers must actually speak English well enough to read signs and talk to cops after a wreck. He declared it a “major economic assault” by a “corrupt administration” and the “tangerine demon.” Then he scolded immigrants: millions of Cubans and Latinos had voted for “the orange convicted felon” and therefore “against their own economic self-interest,” just like those foolish American farmers.

This is not the first time Castro has been in the headlines for his activism. In 2018 he was arrested during an immigration protest at Meriden Superior Court after an altercation with judicial marshals; the charges were later dismissed.

Castro has spent years urging cities to notify residents the moment federal agents appear, consulting on “protect immigrants regardless of status” resolutions, and showing up whenever ICE is in town.

The truth is that a nation that refuses to enforce its borders eventually stops being a nation. And it’s not bigotry to say that.
