Sen. Chris Murphy called Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed “a really good candidate” and dismissed Republican opponent Mike Rogers as a joke.

Murphy spoke to reporters today after Senate Democrats met with El-Sayed at Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee headquarters near the Capitol.

“We’re going to win Michigan,” Murphy said. “Abdul is a really good candidate. Mike Rogers is a joke — a guy who continues to cheerlead war, who’s going to be a rubber stamp for Donald Trump.”

“Abdul sees this world as a fight between worker power and corporate power,” Murphy said. “Frankly we need more people like that in the U.S. Senate.”

He argued some conservatives would back El-Sayed because they “want government to unrig the economy,” a higher minimum wage, and less power for insurance and drug companies.

“Abdul is going to be able to cross over and get conservative, traditionally Republican support in Michigan,” Murphy said. “I think he’ll be more of a bridge builder here than folks think he will be.”

“I’m all in, and I think my colleagues are all in.”

Murphy also praised El-Sayed for refusing “incremental solutions to huge problems."

“Abdul is somebody who’s not afraid to talk about the ways that both our politics and our economy is corrupt, and I applaud him for that,” he said.

Asked if he would join El-Sayed on the trail, Murphy said: “Sure, if he wants me to be there, I’ll be there.”

Murphy said on Monday that his mobilization fund sent another $525,000 to state parties and Democrats’ House and Senate committees.

“Republicans are pouring unprecedented amounts of money into the midterms,” Murphy wrote in an email Wednesday. “Musk has pledged to spend upwards of $200 million, and Trump’s own super PAC entered the fall with roughly half a billion to spend.”

“I refuse to sit idly by as their billionaire donors try to buy another election, and these investments won’t be our last.”
