Connecticut Republicans in the UConn area are raising pointed concerns that students may have been improperly registered to vote during the 2024 election — and that similar activity could occur at any Connecticut college or university again in 2026.

In an October 14 letter to UConn President Radenka Maric, Chris Coyle and Aaron Bowman — CT GOP State Central Committee representatives for the 29th Senate District — described partisan operations on and around the Storrs campus the night before Election Day 2024. They said political party operatives placed materials on dormitory room doors, used free luxury bus transportation that utilized UConn driveways, and offered free food to induce students to register and vote, often without regard to whether those students were already registered in their hometowns.

These were not neutral get-out-the-vote efforts available to all students, the letter states. They were paid, partisan operations intended to surge same-day voter registrations (SDVRs) and votes. The result was a record volume of SDVRs at Mansfield polls that overwhelmed the system and triggered investigations by the State Elections Enforcement Commission (SEEC). Mansfield’s Registrar of Voters is required by state law to send follow-up letters to every person who registers via SDVR; undeliverable returns raise questions about whether students provided accurate address information.

The letter notes that UConn policies appear to prohibit most or all of these activities — and that if they are allowed for one party, they must be allowed for all. Residence-hall canvassing requires advance approval from Residential Living & Education (three business days), posting requires longer lead time, and door-to-door solicitation is restricted. University resources and branding may not be used for campaign activity. The Republicans asked Maric’s office to direct a clear message that “UConn policies will be fully and uniformly enforced. Violations of any kind will not be tolerated,” and to notify relevant university departments, the Town of Mansfield, and state and local political parties.

Connecticut law allows college students to register at either their home address or their campus physical dwelling (dorm room or apartment), but not both, and not using a campus P.O. box or mail center as the voting address. Same-day registration requires proof of identity and residency. These rules exist for a reason; when large-scale, last-minute registration drives are run by partisan operatives rather than neutral civic groups, the risk of errors, double registration, or questionable domicile claims increases.

The same structural issues exist at other Connecticut institutions. Most colleges and universities either ban door-to-door solicitation in residence halls or require advance approval for any canvassing or posting. None specifically authorize unapproved partisan operatives to hang materials on dorm doors or use campus facilities for one-sided voter-registration efforts the night before an election. The UConn situation is simply the most visible because of the volume of same-day registrations and the subsequent challenges in the district.

The Connecticut Centinal has contacted the Office of the President at UConn regarding the letter and the underlying concerns. We will update this story if we receive a response.

Election integrity requires consistent rules. Students have every right to vote where they actually live. They do not have a right to be funneled into registration by partisan operatives using methods that appear to violate campus policy and strain the verification process. Uniform enforcement is not a partisan ask. It is the minimum required to keep campus voting both accessible and credible.
