Tonight, as the first joint congressional address unfolds, speculation suggests that Democratic lawmakers may disrupt the proceedings. But before they make another scene, they should answer for their recent actions—specifically, why 45 Democrat Senators, including Connecticut Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, voted against protecting women’s rights in sports, locker rooms, and bathrooms.

Just two years ago, House Democrats did something similar, refusing to acknowledge the importance of safeguarding women’s sports. Now, the Senate has followed suit. The Democrat Party has long championed a woman’s right to abortion—often rallying behind the slogan “My body, my choice.” But when it comes to protecting women’s rights in sports, where is that same energy? Why did the majority of Senate Democrats vote against ensuring fairness and safety for women athletes?

Understanding Title IX and Its Purpose

Title IX, passed in 1972, was designed to ensure women were given equal opportunities in education, including athletics. Recognizing biological differences, the law mandated separate sports for men and women—not a quota system forcing equal participation, but a framework ensuring women had their own teams, leagues, and opportunities to compete. The law never required that a football team be half women because such an arrangement would not be safe or fair.

The intent was clear: provide women with their own space to compete and succeed. Yet today, identity politics is overriding this principle, allowing men who identify as women to enter female sports, take scholarships, break records, and even physically endanger women in contact sports.

Why Are Women’s Rights Being Ignored?

By prioritizing the demands of less than 1% of the population over the rights of biological women—who make up nearly 50%—Democrats are turning their backs on the very group Title IX was designed to protect. Women are losing equal opportunities, scholarships, championships, and, in some cases, their safety.

According to The Daily Signal, Senate Democrats blocked a bill that would have banned biological males from competing in women’s sports. Karoline Leavitt, a political commentator, noted the disconnect:“How can you be against that when 80% of the country is for it?”

That’s a fair question. Instead of causing a ruckus tonight, Democrats should explain why they refuse to defend the integrity of women’s sports. If they truly care about women’s rights, they must stop catering to radical ideology and start protecting fairness, safety, and opportunity for female athletes.
