“Maybe state funding. Maybe legal protection. We’re looking at everything.” That’s how Rep. Robin Comey (D-Branford) responded to news that Connecticut Children’s Hospital is shutting down its gender care program for minors. In other words, hide your wallets. She’s coming for your tax dollars to fund ideology disguised as healthcare. And if you’re a confused 15-year-old with a TikTok account and a binder, she’s ready to write a blank check.
Comey jumped on TikTok July 24 to deliver what she clearly hoped would be a brave stand — but it came off like a meltdown in real time. Connecticut Children’s Hospital had just announced it was ending its gender care program for minors, and Comey claimed her phone was “absolutely blowing up.”
The Branford Democrat’s immediate takeaway wasn’t to ask why one of the most prominent hospitals in the state was pulling the plug on these treatments. It wasn’t to ask what legal or ethical landmines might’ve triggered this sudden reversal. No, her solution was to have Connecticut taxpayers foot the bill instead — redirecting public money to cover puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and irreversible surgeries for minors who can’t legally buy a pack of cigarettes.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), gender-affirming care includes an “array” of treatments, from name and pronoun changes all the way to chest reconstruction, genital surgery, and facial feminization — for children. Many of these procedures are described, quite literally, as "not reversible."
“I am so heartbroken about this,” she sniffles into the camera, before reassuring her audience that “Connecticut didn’t ban this care.” No one did, in fact. What happened is that Connecticut Children’s decided, after "thoughtful consideration and guidance from medical and legal experts," that maybe turning your pediatric wing into a hormone therapy clinic wasn’t the brightest business model. But because the federal government finally decided to stop subsidizing this ideological Frankenstein, Comey wants the state to take over the funding — because when the adults say “no,” she thinks the kids should just ask Grandpa Lamont to write a check instead.
“This isn’t about the care not working,” the lawmaker claims. Of course not. It never is. It’s never about long-term complications, regret rates, or the explosion of lawsuits in other states. It’s about “politics interfering with health care,” says the politician interfering with health care.
Meanwhile, Governor Lamont blamed “relentless federal demands” for creating “fear, confusion, and legal uncertainty” — which is politician-speak for: the lawsuits are coming, and hospitals would rather not get sued into bankruptcy.
That same evening, Comey appeared alongside Rep. Moira Rader (D-Branford) and Senator Christine Cohen (D-Guilford) at a community forum—three lawmakers with no medical credentials offering policy solutions on puberty blockers and surgeries for minors. Medical experts reviewed the program and shut it down; these three responded with a listening session and vague promises to find workarounds.
“This completely sucks,” she whines, trying to level with the youth, “but we’re going to figure it out together.” Yes, because nothing instills confidence in a teenager like watching a middle-aged legislator publicly unravel while promising to get them access to hormone injections.
At the end of her emotional monologue, Comey declares, “Connecticut hasn’t abandoned our children, and we never will.” But the truth is, she already has — by pretending this is science, ignoring the risks, and pushing taxpayer-funded surgery under the banner of “compassion.”
Robin Comey wants taxpayers to bankroll irreversible procedures for teenagers — all while pretending it’s some noble civil rights crusade. No amount of TikTok tears can disguise the truth: this isn’t compassion. It’s child exploitation, paid for by you.
