As we begin the 2025 legislative session, my focus remains unwavering: representing your interests and fighting for the values that make Connecticut a better place to live, work, raise a family, and retire. Despite being in a legislature dominated by progressive Democrats, I remain committed to delivering results for you, my neighbors.
While passing new laws to improve your lives is always a priority, serving in the minority often means that one of my most critical roles is to stop bad laws and harmful policies from being enacted. In many cases, preventing destructive legislation is just as important as advancing positive reforms, and I take this responsibility seriously.
Let me start with a simple truth: while Republicans may be an extreme numerical minority in Hartford, our policies and principles align far more closely with the values and priorities of Connecticut residents than those of the Democrats in power. On the most pressing issues—affordability, energy prices, crime, and illegal immigration—elected Democrats have failed, while Republicans offer real solutions grounded in common sense and shared values.
Connecticut residents are struggling under the weight of skyrocketing energy costs. Progressive Democrats’ energy policies have failed you, prioritizing ideological experiments over practical solutions. Programs that subsidize delinquent accounts and impose hidden fees for ineffective "green energy" initiatives have turned Eversource into a de facto tax collector for the state.
Since 2023, I have championed measures to reduce your energy bills, starting with the permanent removal of "Public Benefits Charges" and expanding access to affordable, reliable energy sources like nuclear and hydropower. Unlike elected Democrats, who obsess over costly electric vehicle subsidies, Republicans understand that lowering energy costs requires real competition and practical solutions. Let’s restore sanity to Connecticut’s energy policies.
Connecticut’s cost of living is among the highest in the nation, driven by bloated government and reckless spending. My mission is to reduce these burdens by capping excessive licensing fees, cutting income tax rates, and creating a property tax levy cap. By eliminating nonessential unfunded mandates, we can reduce costs for towns and businesses, creating a ripple effect of savings for everyone.
Elected Democrats, on the other hand, continue to seek ways to spend more and tax more, hiding behind terms like “revenue enhancements” to disguise their true intentions. Let me be clear: the more government grows, the more you pay. Republicans stand for fiscal responsibility and policies that empower you, not the bureaucracy.
Confronting the Consequences of Illegal Immigration
Illegal immigration is not just a national issue—it’s impacting Connecticut directly. For years, I’ve warned about the dangers of elected Democrats’ "Super Sanctuary State" policies, which protect criminal illegal aliens while ignoring the safety and financial concerns of law-abiding residents. The 2019 expansion of the “TRUST Act” not only shielded undocumented immigrants from ICE but also removed exceptions that allowed communication with ICE in cases involving dangerous criminals, known gang members, and even terrorists. Effectively, in 2019, legislative Democrats chose to protect criminal aliens as well.
This year, my Republican colleagues will join onto my perennial proposals to address the issue of illegal immigration. These proposals include revising the TRUST Act to allow law enforcement to collaborate with ICE, restoring misdemeanor offenses as triggers for deportation, and ending state-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants. While we want to welcome hardworking immigrants who contribute to our society, we must do so within the bounds of the law. Anything less is a disservice to Connecticut residents who play by the rules.
Elected Democrats Are Out of Step with Connecticut Residents
Poll after poll shows that Republicans are on the right side of the issues that matter most to Connecticut families. Yet, legislative Democrats, emboldened by their supermajority and an overly compliant media, dismiss these priorities as "radical" or "far-right." This couldn’t be further from the truth. Common-sense solutions to energy costs, crime, and affordability reflect the will of the majority—not some fringe ideology.
Consider their approach to public safety. Instead of supporting law enforcement and ensuring accountability, they’ve doubled down on policies that make our communities less safe. Their defiance of federal laws, including their open hostility to efforts to secure the southern border, is not just misguided—it’s dangerous.
A Call to Action
While I’ll continue to advocate for policies that put Connecticut residents first, I also need your help. The reality is that Democrats are running out of excuses. Without one-time COVID-era federal funds to mask their fiscal mismanagement, their true priorities will be exposed. Watch closely as they attempt to unravel the financial guardrails Republicans fought to establish.
To that end, I have submitted a broad spectrum of proposals this session that I believe should garner overwhelming and universal support. These include measures to improve government accountability, restore election integrity, improve our currently unaffordable healthcare system, and make Connecticut safe and affordable again. I encourage you to explore the full list of bills on my legislative webpage to see how these proposals can make a positive difference in your life.
Closing Thoughts
Despite the challenges of being in the minority, I am optimistic about the future. Connecticut residents are smart, hardworking, and resilient. I believe that as more people recognize the failures of one-party rule, they will demand change. It’s not about party affiliation; it’s about policies that work for everyone.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with your questions, concerns, or ideas. I’m here to listen and to fight for what matters to you. Together, we will turn the tide and make Connecticut a state where opportunity, freedom, and prosperity thrive once again.
