State Sen. Rob Sampson (R-Wolcott), ranking member of the Government Administration and Elections Committee, yesterday applauded the Connecticut Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling in favor of his free speech case with former Sen. Joe Markley dating back to 2014.
“I strongly applaud the unanimous findings of Connecticut's highest court. Justice has prevailed. As ranking member of the Government Administration and Elections Committee, I work hard to create sensible policy on campaign finance law. I am pleased that we now have clarity on the law, and that future candidates can utilize their First Amendment rights.
“In our case, it should have been perfectly reasonable for me to inform my constituents—and voters—that I did not support the policies of the former governor. This is an example of how important it is to stand up for your principles, even at great risk. A government agency, which originally issued the erroneous ruling, should not go unchecked. For the past four campaign cycles—nearly 10 years—this now-overturned ruling was used as a means of attack by my Democrat opponents. I am pleased to be vindicated, and proud to have had the courage to stand up for what is right. Free speech, particularly political speech, must be protected,” he said.
