As Connecticut residents are opening their January electricity bills, Senior Deputy Republican Leader Rob Sampson (R-Wolcott) and Connecticut Republicans today unveiled a detailed six-point plan to bring about stability and relief for consumers.

“Connecticut families are at a breaking point with skyrocketing electricity bills that disproportionately affect our working and middle-class residents. This isn't just a discomfort—it's a crisis, and it demands immediate action.

“For months, I’ve stood with my Republican colleagues to advocate for realistic solutions to provide rate relief. The fact of the matter is, majority Democrats have for years turned our utility providers into de facto tax collectors for the state. Our bills reflect all the hidden taxes that they impose on us like the 'Public Benefits' charges. This should be removed.

“We have repeatedly called for a special legislative session to fix this problem, backed by a petition signed by 68,000 residents of our state that demand relief. Despite the thousands if not millions who are hurting, Democrats choose to deflect and do nothing. I will not stop in pushing for a solution to make energy in our state—and our state as a whole—more affordable,” said Senator Sampson.

    The Republicans’ plan would:

    1) remove Public Benefits Charges from electric bills

    2) prohibit agreements that buy electricity at 150 % above the wholesale price

    3) redefine "Class I renewable energy source" to include any

electricity generated from a hydropower or nuclear power generating facility

    4) separate PURA from DEEP

    5) eliminate any incentive program that increases electric demand, including, any electric vehicle rebate program

    6) study ways to increase the supply of natural gas
