Chief Deputy Senate Republican Leader Rob Sampson today questioned Connecticut Democrats’ retreat from their years-long push to eliminate the Electoral College. On Tuesday, the state’s seven electors cast their votes for Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost both the national popular vote and Electoral College to former President and current President-elect Donald Trump on Nov. 5.
For years, Connecticut Democrats have sought to eliminate the Electoral College and even voted, mostly along party lines, to have Connecticut join the "National Popular Vote Compact." Under this law, once a minimum number of states join, member states would be required to cast their Electoral College votes for the winner of the national popular vote for all 50 states.
“Wouldn’t it have been ironic if Connecticut Democrats got their wish and were required to vote for former President and current President-elect Donald Trump? I led the fight against the National Popular Vote Compact for several years, even effectively defeating more than one attempt before it was ultimately passed.
“Democrats’ argument, which never made any sense to me, was a requirement for 'one person, one vote.' Obviously, that’s not what this is. Beware that they are now pushing a new, brazen and misguided scheme called 'ranked choice voting.' No doubt, you will be hearing more about it in the coming months. I will be standing for election integrity, honest elections, and the true definition of one person, one vote,” said Sen. Sampson.
