H.B. No. 7065, An Act Concerning the Decriminalization of Possession of Small Amounts of Psilocybin, was introduced by the Judiciary Committee on February 24, 2025.
The proposed legislation would make possession of less than one-half ounce of psilocybin punishable by a $150 fine for the first offense, and a $200 to $500 fine for a second offense, without the threat of jail time.
Possession of more than a half-ounce of psilocybin would be considered a Class A misdemeanor and police would be required to seize and destroy any psilocybin they find as contraband in accordance with law.
This is not the first time legislators have tried to decriminalize magic mushrooms in Connecticut.
Similar proposals were made in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
Last year, Republicans expressed concerned that while small amounts of psilocybin might have legitimate medicinal purposes, medicinal use would mark the first step toward approving magic mushrooms for recreational use, and that's a bridge too far.
Lamont previously indicated he had concerns about broad decriminalization of psilocybin, though he did champion and sign legislation to legalize cannabis in 2021.
