Trumbull High School (THS) is under fire today after a bulletin board touting Kamala Harris for President was put up by the SHADES Club.

SHADES describes itself as "a community in Trumbull High School where students can feel safe and accepted, regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other aspects that make them feel different. It is an opportunity for these students, who may feel alone and alienated, to feel like they belong."

But when a woman from the community reached out to The Edmund Burke Society at THS to ask whether the group had an equal opportunity to display a conservative bulletin board, she said the answer was "no" but they were still in "talks" with the school.

"The Young Republicans in our town deserve to be heard every bit as much as those on the other side of the political spectrum and I strongly encourage our BOE and the THS administration to step up and do so. And not in some back hallway some place," said the woman.

The Kamala bulletin board went up on Friday.

"How convenient since they are registering kids to vote this week," quipped the woman, who is concerned that the bulletin board may violate school policies, especially with respect to fairness and equity.

Chris Pettinella, a student in Trumbull who fought to start The Edmund Burke Society at THS, commented on the Facebook post about the Kamala bulletin board.

The Centinal was able to reach Pettinella to verify the story.

Pettinella said that for years he had requested a bulletin board for The Edmund Burke Society but was told it would cost him $1,000 by the Dean of Students.

Pettinella said he could have purchased it for $100.

"Today I got called down to the principal, Todd Manual's office. I am pleased to say that after 2 years the Edmund Burke Society’s bulletin board will finally have a place at Trumbull High," said Pettinella who felt the media attention helped with the approval.

But, he added, "it is extremely unforgivable that it took this long to accomplish."

"Following today’s meeting with the principal, I was surprised to find out that the bulletin board is free for clubs! This especially concerns me due to the fact that the Dean of Students told me I would have to purchase a bulletin board through him for $1,000. The Dean of Students has been discriminating against me and my peers club," alleged Pettinella who is happy that his club will finally have an equal opportunity to share its message.

The Centinal reached out to the Superintendent for comment and will update this article if we receive a response.
