URGENT FIC Call To Action: Don't Ban Parents From Challenging Porn In Schools!

While Connecticut librarians have their own house to clean, Raised Bill 1271 punishes parents, students and community members with doxxing of personal information (sec4d6), violation of freedom of speech (secs 3f, line 147, line 268, lines 143 and 282, forced speech - lines 99/121/244/263), and violation of your right to be heard and receive redress of grievances (line 72, 147, 203, 314) and right petition our government (lines 72, 147, 203, 314).

RB 1271 forbids the cancellation of Drag Queen Story Hours (secs 3d2,, 4d2) and more.

It claims to "protect" Boards of Education (line 181), but then forces them to adopt a policy that vests authority with librarians and their professional association (ALA - which is subversive and extremist) (sec 3d3).

It forces taxpayers to subsidize compliant libraries (sec5), but then restricts who can challenge books (sec 3d5, 4d1). All this, while giving immunity to librarians (3e) (who have their own house to clean) and threatening community members, even students (line 217), with lawsuits (3f).

It facilitates one-on-one exposure of students/children to sexually explicit materials by adults out of the view and review of their parents.

Why does it matter if librarians have been convicted and arrested for possession of child porn in CT?

Because it illustrates that no adults should have access to sharing vulgar and/or sexually explicit material with our children, particularly at the libraries which facilitate private spaces. Porn is ubiquitous now in our culture, and we need to have barriers to non-parental adults privately sharing explicit images with children. This bill would erase those barriers by preventing parents and the community (our community watchdogs) from objecting to the porn in the library (**explicit**). These books are still available to parents to share with their children from other sources; they are not unavailable or "banned."

Steps to take if you are concerned about the inability to challenge sexualized books as a parent or teacher in CT school and public libraries:

1. CLICK HERE TO USE FIC'S ACTION CENTER to send your legislators notice.

2. CLICK HERE TO SUBMIT TESTIMONY, which can be anonymous, to oppose RB1271. Here are some suggestions for your written testimony:

  • Find a pervasively vulgar book - please avoid books just because they have gay content - this will not be persuasive and is not considered vulgar in CT.  We have plenty of graphic, sexually explicit content to consider: https://takebacktheclassroom.com/collections/conneticut
  • See if it is in your library: https://www.destinydiscover.com/aasp/ui/pick/
  • Add images of the book and screenshot evidence of it in you local library (school is best, I think) See example here . . https://nopornforkidsct.org.  Sorry, but it is explicit.
  • Add to your written testimony, save as a PDF (you can use Google Docs, which is free and easy) OR just write something in the testimony text box like "I oppose this government overreach to our public libraries. Keep local control for libraries."

3.  CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP TO SPEAK about RB1271 in person at the hearing on Thursday, February 13th at 3 PM. You will need to prepare testimony that is under 3 minutes to present in person. Let the Family Institute of Connecticut know you will be there by emailing us at [email protected]

4. Share this with others - we need parents to take steps 1 and 2 at minimum today.
