Michael Massey is running for U.S. Congress in Connecticut's third congressional district against Rosa DeLauro, the smooth talking, purple-haired Congresswoman from New Haven who has filled the seat ever since she was first elected in 1990.
At 81 years old, DeLauro is one of the oldest members of Congress. She's one of the most progressive, too, with a long list of ties to the Communist Party USA. Heck, she was on the host committee for Connecticut Communist Party USA member Al Marder's 90th Birthday Celebration, and even inserted a tribute to Marder in the US Congressional record.
Massey's journey into politics is not at all traditional.
According to his website:
"Growing up in poverty, Michael faced adversity from an early age. With limited resources and few positive role models, he was drawn into the dangers of the streets, experiencing violence and hardship firsthand. His trajectory led him into trouble with the law, resulting in incarceration for various offenses. However, it was during this time that Michael's perspective underwent a profound transformation. Exposed to alternative viewpoints and disillusioned by the media's portrayal of political messages, he began to question the narrative he had been fed."
Massey then embarked on a path self-discovery and political awakening that transformed his understanding of the world.
He drew on inspiration from leaders like Donald Trump to develop his policy proposals, and now he wants to shake up the political landscape in Connecticut and beyond.
Found of CDM and The Connecticut Centinal, L. Todd Wood, had an opportunity to interview Massey and learn more about his ambitious campaign against Democrat party stalwart DeLauro.
Massey is a long-time resident of Connecticut, and has been dabbling in politics for the last eight years. He's been endorsed by the Independent Party, as well.
His platform is focused on urban communities, in particular, where there are growing problems with drugs, violence and even murder. Massey points out how democrats have controlled these urban areas for a long time, but the conditions never seem to improve.
"Democrats have dropped the ball," says Massey.
But Massey is optimistic that Trump has opened people's eyes, especially in the black community, about these democratic policy failures.
Massey admits he may not be as smooth a talker as his purple-haired competitor, but he's here to work for the people and to help turn around the horrible conditions in urban communities.
