Navy Veteran Matt Corey is hoping for a rematch against U.S. Senator Chris Murphy in November.

Corey announced he was running at the end of April after assessing the candidates in the race and deciding he was better positioned than others to take on Murphy.

His announcement came kind of late in the game, just a couple weeks before the Republican convention, as opposed to Beacon Falls First Selectman Gerry Smith, for instance, who announced his intentions to run against Murphy in February.

At the end of the convention, Smith was the top vote getter with 68% of the vote, but Corey earned enough votes (29%) to automatically qualify for a primary, which will take place on August 13th.

Corey came to Greenwich last night to speak at the Republican Town Committee (RTC) meeting.

He immediately won over the pro-Trump crowd in the room.

"I support Donald Trump," said Corey who was happy to defend Trump's policies when he ran against Murphy in 2018, and he's happy to defend Trump's policies once again in 2024.

"And how hard is it to defend? Peace around the world. A secure border. Our support of law enforcement. An economy that worked for everyone," said Corey. "Senator Murphy doesn't support any of that."

Corey talked about Biden's decision to exit the race, and how Kamala Harris is even "more left than Bernie Sanders." Then Corey took Murphy to task over his foreign policy failures, calling him an Iranian sympathizer.

"You went over there and undermined President Trump's Administration by talking to the Iranians," charged Corey who believes Murphy should be held accountable under the Logan Act.

"The only thing that Senator Murphy wants to put sanctions on is American Energy," asserted Corey.

He continued, "Iranians are funding the Houthi rebels, Hamas rebels and Hezbollah. And what are they funding? The anti-Semitism that's running through this country! Senator Murphy is a failure. He took the Houthis off the terrorist organization watch list."

Corey blasted Murphy over the "bipartisan border bill" failure that would have allowed 5,000 illegal immigrants to come across the border per day, and given the president emergency powers to close the border down after 5,000 people crossed.

"We need to build that border wall! Casey Chadwick's mother who lives in Norwich was killed by an illegal alien... Rachel Moran's five kids that were killed by an illegal alien," said Corey. "Catch and Release does not work. Our communities are not safer, despite what Senator Murphy says."

Corey turned the discussion to how Trump's Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will positively impact small businesses and individuals, himself included, before wrapping up his remarks.

"If you want somebody that's outspoken, that's going to take the fight... I've never stopped fighting... I'm your candidate," promised Corey.
