According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, Memorial Day is the "nation's foremost annual day to mourn and honor its deceased service men and women."

The holiday was first formalized by John A. Logan, the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic on May 5, 1868, with a "Memorial Day Order" that talked about the importance of "cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead."

The modern proclamation calls upon Americans to unite "to observe Memorial Day by praying, according to their individual religious faith, for permanent peace." The holiday is marked with wreath ceremonies at war memorials and graves, flag raising ceremonies, and parades and memorial services to honor the fallen.

Two years ago, the Greenwich Republican Town Committee ("RTC") gathered volunteers to perform Memorial Day Flag Ceremonies at all 15 of our public schools.

They called on Republicans to join them as they marched in the Memorial Day parade down Sound Beach Avenue in Old Greenwich. At the end of the parade, Republicans greeted the community, sharing food and drinks and passing out flags.

It was a respectful and thoughtful way to remember our "heroic dead."

But this year things were a bit different.

The Greenwich Democrats invited folks to march in the Memorial Day parade in Old Greenwich, but the Republicans said nothing.

The RTC's email on Memorial Day was titled, "Power-Grab Housing Bill Moving Through Hartford" which, as you might have guessed, was all about the "eleventh-hour Frankenstein bill" cooked up by scheming Democrats in Hartford last week. The email also included an invitation to join the RTC at the next meeting in Town Hall on May 28th at 8pm.

The email didn't make a single mention of Memorial Day -- not even a graphic to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice to afford us our freedoms.

I responded to the email, shocked that the RTC declined to put out a message to remember the fallen on Memorial Day, and that it instead put out a message on a housing bill.

I was told by the RTC chair, who has publicly questioned Greenwich Patriots, to "learn my facts" because the "membership" had "passed" on Memorial Day. Additionally, the poor timing of the message about the "power-grab housing bill" was passed off as just being on a "timer" by their bulk email provider.

The snarky response left me feeling even more disappointed.

Nonetheless, I took the advice of the RTC chair, and asked my RTC friends for the "facts" about whether the membership had, in fact, decided to take a "pass" on Memorial Day.

I was stunned to learn that indeed a survey had been sent -- a survey asking if members wanted to remember and honor deceased service men and women on Memorial Day -- and apparently the decision was actually made to snub our fallen heroes!!

It was not a unanimous decision, however, as I have been told by RTC members who felt equally disappointed with the results of the survey.

I told my friend, a former special ops helicopter pilot in the U.S. Air Force who also happens to own The Connecticut Centinal, all about it, too. He was just as shocked as I was at the decision not to honor our fallen heroes.

The crazy thing is that within twenty minutes of that tweet getting posted, the RTC chair called to scream at me, someone who is not even a member of the RTC because I was told I hadn't "waited" long enough, to "delete the tweet" right now.

I said "no" so he immediately hung up on me and started calling my friends.

Mind you, there was still ample time to send a thoughtful Memorial Day message after I contacted the RTC to express my dismay. I waited all day and checked the RTC twitter feed before writing this. The only new post on the RTC's X page or on the Instagram page since January was a thank you to the "old timers" for donating to the high school sailing team.

I can't help but wonder...

Why did the Greenwich RTC leadership think it was important to thank people for donating to the sailing team, but not important to remember the fallen on Memorial Day?

Why was it more important for the RTC Chair to try to censor someone else's free speech than it was to simply send a message to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom?

And will there be future votes about whether to honor Veterans' Day or Independence Day? Just curious.
